The drama tells the story of how King Lee Heon (Yeo Jin Goo) enlists the help of clown Ha Seon (Yeo Jin Goo) to take his place on the throne as he tries to uncover who is trying to dethrone him. Lee Kyu (Kim Sang Kyung), Jo Nae Gwan (Jang Gwang), Joo Ho Geol (Lee Kyu Han), and Jang Moo Young (Yoon Jong Seok) have fallen for Ha Seon and his hopes to lead a political system that is for the people.
The stills show the group of actors as they smile and enjoy each other’s company on set. The warmth in their eyes is enough to keep everyone content as they go over their lines together. The actors can be seen beating off the cold with a variety of items including warm, fluffy scarves, earmuffs, and cups of hot coffee. The bright expressions on their faces are in contrast to some of the characters they play in the drama.
The production staff stated, “Filming is underway with the actors showing great teamwork. Their excellent chemistry is translating well into the drama, and that is why we’re able to bring such great moments to viewers.” They also teased, “The remaining three episodes will be more fast-paced than ever as everything unfolds. Please keep an eye on what these characters will do next.”
The Crowned Clown” airs every Monday and Tuesday on tvN at 9:30 p.m. KST.
Yeo Jin Goo’s 9 Most Spectacular Moments From “The Crowned Clown”
Feb 18, 2019 by hgordon
Yeo Jin Goo has been capturing hearts for a while now with his incredible acting and charming good looks. But this year he’s taken his acting to the next level in tvN’s “The Crowned Clown,” which has given him the opportunity to play two characters at once: a mad king and the innocent, happy-go-lucky clown that must pose as the ruler. This dual role has allowed the young actor to showcase a huge range of emotions and dimensions for these complex characters, taking our breath away with his multi-faceted acting. From paranoid and creepy to sweet and charismatic, here are Yeo Jin Goo’s nine most impressive acting moments from “The Crowned Clown”!
Warning: spoilers for “The Crowned Clown” Episodes 1-10 below.
1. The king and the clown’s first meeting
Perhaps one of the most phenomenal moments comes right off the bat when King Lee Heon and Ha Seon the clown first meet at the end of Episode 1. As Yeo Jin Goo faces himself, he brings out a contrast between these two characters that is incredible — even chilling — to watch, as clown becomes king.
2. Lee Heon’s drug-induced madness
As King Lee Heon removes himself from the palace, he descends deeper and deeper into madness. And Yeo Jin Goo’s delirious swaying and ritualistic goop-smearing are downright eerie, yet absolutely fascinating to watch. We can’t look away!
3. Ha Seon’s righteousness
Ha Seon may be a clown, but he understands a lot more about what is right versus wrong than most people in the palace. And we love seeing him stand up for justice and morality:
4. Lee Heon’s paranoia
The king’s loss of sanity peaks during this scene when Minister Lee Gyu (Kim Sang Kyung) pays him a visit, only to find Lee Heon sitting on the ground with blood pouring out of his ear. Paranoid that the younger brother he murdered is haunting him, Lee Heon’s mental instability is accented by Yeo Jin Goo’s masterfully unsettling vacant gaze.
5. Ha Seon’s adorable hiccups
Meanwhile, Yeo Jin Goo brings a very different vibe to Ha Seon, whose actions with the Queen (Lee Se Young) are downright adorable — especially when he is so surprised at the Queen kissing him that he gets a case of the hiccups!
6. Lee Heon’s violence
In contrast, Yeo Jin Goo is absolutely terrifying when he is King Lee Heon, whether it be towards palace maids, consorts, officials, or any bystander who happens to rub him the wrong way. These scenes aren’t easy to watch, but it’s incredible how well Yeo Jin Goo can pull off being sweet and loving in some scenes and horrifyingly psycho in others.
7. Lee Heon’s birthday
But the King is not entirely a villain, and Yeo Jin Goo brings moments of clarity to the character in some scenes, offering us hints of a childlike, softer side beneath the madness and making us long for Lee Heon to recover his senses.
8. Lee Heon’s final moments
Unfortunately, Lee Heon’s most tender moments come right in his final hours. And when Minister Lee poisons the King, Lee Heon’s death scene is incredibly difficult to watch, but in a beautifully tragic way that tore deeply at our heartstrings.
9. Ha Seon’s inspiring run
Unwilling to accept common men into their government, the court’s scholars tell Ha Seon that he will have to walk across their backs if he wants to allow a mathematically talented, yet low-class, man (Lee Gyu Han) into his court. And Ha Seon responds with the poise of a man who is beginning to grow into his role as the new king: no longer a clown, Ha Seon shows us the determination and strength that he has gained during his time in the palace, with character growth that Yeo Jin Goo has compellingly finessed.
Between the King’s tragic arc and the clown’s inspiring growth, “The Crowned Clown” has been a breathtaking journey so far. But it’s not over yet, and we can’t wait to see how Yeo Jin Goo continues to bring Ha Seon to life in the episodes to come!

Yeo Jin Goo, who played the double role of the clown Ha Seon and king Lee Heon, said, “This was a drama that I had very much looked forward to. I was always anxious to find out what would happen next, and as a viewer of the drama as well, I was so happy.”
“I was so happy that I was able to play two incredible characters,” said the actor. I will continue to act like Lee Heon and Ha Seon: at times with cold, cutting gazes, and at times with enveloping warmth.”
Lee Se Young, who played the queen Yoo So Yoon said, “Thank you to all of the viewers who loved Yoo So Yoon. I also want to thank our director, writer, and all of the staff and cast, who worked so hard through the cold weather. Thanks to them, we were able to successfully wrap filming. It was such a meaningful and happy time, being able to start the new year with such a great drama.”
Kim Sang Kyung, who played the role of Lee Gyu, also thanked viewers for their love and support for the drama. “I was also very happy in the time I spent as Lee Gyu.”
Lee Hye Young thanked the staff and cast, and added, “Thank you to my partner Kim Sang Kyung. I felt some pressure doing a sageuk for the first time in a while, so thank you to everyone for their love and support.”
Jang Young Nam likewise sent accolades to everyone who worked on the drama, and thanked them for creating such a great atmosphere on set. “And a sincere thank you to all of the viewers of ‘The Crowned Clown.'”
Lee Gyu Han said, “This drama was a new challenge, being my first ever sageuk drama. Playing the great character Joo Ho Geol, I was able to grow a lot, and I will remember this as a precious, fun experience.”
Yoon Jong Suk expressed his reluctance to say goodbye, and added, “Talking a lot with the director and having a good time with all of the staff, this drama was really fun to film. I would love to do a drama this fun and happy again.
Lee Moo Saeng said, “I don’t know how to express my gratitude that all of the hard work of the staff, cast, and director wasn’t for nothing,” and wished for the message of dreams and hope from “The Crowned Clown” would live in viewers for a long time.
