Buku ini berkisarkan kisah Natrah atau nama sebenarnya Nadra Binti Ma'aruf atau Huberdina Maria Hertogh atau Bertha, anak Belanda. Beliau menjadi anak angkat kepada ibu Melayu yang bernama Che Aminah bind Mohamad yang berasal dari Kemaman, Terengganu.

Nama Natrah muncul pertama kali dalam akhbar kerana perbicaraan perebutan hak penjagaan antara ibu angkat Melayunya dengan ibu bapa kandungnya di Belanda. Kesnya kemudian menjadi lebih besar, rumit dan mendapat perhatian masyarakat antarabangsa kerana Natrah berkahwin pada umur 13 tahun dengan seorang pemuda bernama Mansor Adabi, 22 tahun secara Islam kemudian dibicarakan bawah undang-undang sivil Inggeris.

Kesnya menjadi terkenal apabila berlakunya rusuhan berdarah di Singapura demi membela Natrah yang cuba dikristiankan dan membela Islam yang cuba dihina oleh akhbar propenjajah ketika itu.

Sebelum ini buku ini berbentuk tulisan kewartawanan berasaskan penyelidikan di perpustakaan dan di lapangan dan diterbitkan selama empat bulan melalui majalah Dewan Masyarakat, terbitan Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBF) pada bulan Februari, Mac, April, dan Mei 1989.

Kini kisah Natrah ini dirakamkan kembali dalam bentuk buku dengan gaya penulisan kewartawanan kreatif, kerana empat sebab yang utama:

Pertama: Untuk melengkapkan kisah hidup atau biografi Natrah setelah beliau meninggal dunia pada 8 Julai 2009.

Kedua: Untuk memberikan maklumat yang lengkap khusus kepada pembaca yang baru mengikuti kisah Natrah.

Ketiga: Untuk memberikan penghargaan terhadap perjuangan para pejuang membela agama dan menentang penjajah, di sebalik kisah cinta Natrah - Mansor.

Keempat: Untuk membangkitkan rasa cinta kepada agama, bangsa dan tanah air.

In 1888 an Egyptian farmer digging in the sand near the village of Istabl Antar uncovered a mass grave. The bodies weren't human. They were feline—ancient cats that had been mummified and buried in pits in staggering numbers. "Not one or two here and there," reported the English Illustrated Magazine, "but dozens, hundreds, hundreds of thousands, a layer of them, a stratum thicker than most coal seams, ten to twenty cats deep." Some of the linen-wrapped cats still looked presentable, and a few even had gilded faces. Village children peddled the best specimens to tourists for change; the rest were sold in bulk as fertilizer. One ship hauled about 180,000, weighing some 38,000 pounds, to Liverpool to be spread on the fields of England.

Those were the days of generously funded expeditions that dredged through acres of desert in their quest for royal tombs and for splendid gold and painted masks and coffins to adorn the estates and museums of Europe and America. The many thousands of mummified animals that turned up at sacred sites throughout Egypt were just things to be cleared away to get at the good stuff. Few people studied them, and their importance was generally unrecognized.

In the century since then, archaeology has become less of a trophy hunt and more of a science. Excavators now realize that much of their sites' wealth lies in the multitude of details about ordinary folks—what they did, what they thought, how they prayed. Animal mummies are a big part of that pay dirt.

Alcedo atthis (also known as the Eurasian, European, or river kingfisher) has inspired many an obsession. In the world's temperate zones, where drab plumage is the norm, this kingfisher, unlike its North American cousins, bedazzles. Slicing the air like a turquoise missile, it is impossible to disregard.

The yellow, red, orange, and brown birds of the world assume their hues because of a pigment embedded in the keratin matrix of feathers. But blue feathers result from refraction, a prism-style splitting of light inside a feather. Under a microscope each long kingfisher barb, finer than a human hair, glitters with shades of the Caribbean. Tiny structures in the feathers choreograph incoming light, reflecting sapphire in one direction, emerald in another.
