I'm Addicted to Talent

I've watched American Idol for five seasons and I have to say that I'm hooked, obsessed even. Good lord, the opportunity to ferret out talent and predict the future is too powerful to resist. There's one part of the Idol ritual that I never take part in however. I never watch the freaks and geeks during the trials. Making fun of people and watching them make fools of themselves is pitiful and I think that anyone who indulges in this sadism needs a therapist or a lot of work on their self-esteem.
Personally, I've seen very little real talent in the five years that I've been watching the show, but that's part of the excitement. Very little talent means that finding it makes the task difficult enough to be interesting.
Every year there are a lot of moderate talents, people who have enough of the stuff to appear on the show, but not enough to become stars. These borderlines usually lack two or three of the four ingreadients that make a super star: extraordinary vocal skills, stage persona (charisma), looks, and uniqueness of style.
Melinda Doolittle, for example, has a great voice but lacks the persona and looks, and her performances, though technically perfect, lack enough uniqueness. Consequently, though she's an enormously talented singer, she probably will never crack the stardom barrier.
Jennifer Hudson has the powerful diva voice, yet lacks the technical perfection of Ms Doolittle. So why is she a superstar and Melinda's dying a slow show business death? Despite her obesity she's actually quite beautiful and beautiful hefty women are sexually attractive to a fair amount of men. Cie la vie.
Carrie Underwood, on the other hand, isn't nearly as talented vocally as Jennifer or Melinda, but her looks and stage presence more than make up for that edge. Let's face it, she's gorgeous but her generic voice is just adequate in a professional sense. It's apparent that her looks are the reason she's had an easier climb to the top than Hudson or Doolittle.
Chris Daughtry is a talented song writer and arranger. He knows how to take full advantage of his particular type of voice, mixing a rock and country sound that compliments his baritone tone range nicely. It makes him unique and though he's not the most physically expressive singer, he brings magic to his performance. His success after Idol has certainly proved that.
David Cook is a talented singer with a nice vocal range. He's also a wonderful arranger. What he isn't is a song writer. He's terribe. In my opinion, his most magical performance on Idol was the week that he sang the Phantom of the Opera. I think I played that video about a 100 times. Unfortunately, Mr. Cook doesn't fancy himself a singer of romantic ballads. If he continues in his mistaken belief that a pedestrian rock style is his strong point, his career will continue to flounder.
The most unique performer ever to hit American Idol is Fantasia Barrino. In fact, she survives on her uniqueness. She certainly hasn't the looks to be a star, but that voice...OMG! 'Nuff said!
This year has probably seen the most amatuerish group of contestants to ever hit the Idol stage, with the excpetion of two hopefuls, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta, who may turn out to be the best, Adam in particular.
Thank God this guy is as gay as pink mud. It's what gives him his exciting stage presence. He knows how to touch the sensuality gene in everyone, male or female. If anything, Adam will bring gay performers out of the closet.
Adam's the only Idol perfromer that I've seen that's absolutely knocked my socks off. His voice is otherwordly and his raw sensuality rivets an audience's attention like no one since Elvis, and yes, I did see Elvis in the beginning of his career when he mesmerizing the youth of an entire nation, me included.
It's a pity that Allison Iraheta chose Adam's year to compete on the show. She's probably the most naturally talented contestant in Idol history. She does resemble a troll, however, even if it is an attractive one. Since she's only 16 years old, Miss Iraheta has quite a career ahead of her.
This is my list of Idol's super talent. I also have one for the borderline cases like Elliot Yamin, Taylor Hicks and Jordin Sparks. Contestants who lack that certain something to make enough people spend their money to make them stars. Of course, all this is just my opinion and, admittedly, I can't always predict the winner of Idol, but I've done fairly well predicting the success, or lack of it, of all the "talent" on the show.
Having spent most of my life surviving in my own retail business, I've developed a sense for what appeals to the masses, and what appeals to niches. There are obviously only a handful of people with the potential to enthrall a nation, but there have to be scads more who can survive as niche artists. What has amazed me, however, is how few niche artists that Idol has actually uncovered. In a nation of 350 million, I thought they'd be able to dig up a lot more. Oh well.
