Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa
FILMS
When it comes to the silver screen, much excitement is in store for movie-goers this year.
The most anticipated film, undoubt edly is Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa. Said to have been confirmed for distribution in 72 countries, the RM8 million movie will have a difficult time keeping up to expec tations.
The pre-hype for the film has been im mense, and judging by the preview trailer released, The Malay Chronicles (the English title for the film) may not just live up to ex pectations, but in fact, surpass in terms of production quality.
Everyone keep your fingers crossed that the storyline, acting and other little tidbits make the film more spectacular than just impressive CGI.
Meanwhile, another much awaited film will be the sequel to the box-office suc cess that was Lagenda Budak Setan. That one grossed RM4.28 million. The suppos edly titled Katrina will have fans of the lit erary works of Ahadiat Akashah queuing for sure.
The production just had better make sure, that they stay true to the beloved storyline as fans ranted about the ap proach in Lagenda Budak Setan, as com pared to the book.
Another movie worth looking out for will be Raja Azmi's controversial gay-themed movie, ... Dalam Botol.
A blogger's screening done end of last year generated mostly positive reviews, and it will be interesting to see if this movie manages to entice viewers with its risqué theme. After all, Dr Rozmey failed when he thought 2 Alam could pull in the crowd with that approach.
There are also several interesting ef forts - such as Khurafat and Haq, though these offerings are not exactly top of the list when it comes to being ground-breaking.
Who knows though, what plans may be in the pipeline - though with the suc cess of Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah being the surprise third high est grossing movie of 2010, fans can expect the finale of the Zombi trilogy from Ma mat Khalid to be something spec tacular.
The working title will be Zombi Kilang Biskut, a little closer to the first film, Zombi Kampung Pisang.
Movers and shakers of the business
Of course, with Kak Limah strut ting home to the tune of RM6 million - Mamat Khalid's upcom ing projects are in the spotlight.
He seems to have discovered the formula to win over critics and yet score at the box of fice.
Apart from him, young 'un Shamsul Yusof is also a worthy name to keep tabs on despite the contro versial win for Best Director at the 23rd Malaysian Film Festival (FFM) for Evolusi KL Drift 2.
When it comes to the productions - MIG rules su preme and they seem to be un stoppable.
Consider the facts. Of the 29 films released in 2010, 11 were from MIG. Of the total RM73 million from ticket sales - RM41 million belonged to MIG.
Adnan Sempit opened the year with RM7.66 million, setting a record for high est ticket collections ever - before an other production, Ngangkung broke that record to close 2010, with over RM8 mil lion.
MIG head honcho David Teo is laugh ing all the way to the bank, and undoubt edly (or more like hopefully) the Lunar New Year will see many fat angpows be ing distributed.
Tayangan Unggul too deserves a men tion as an upcoming major player. Known for their eclectic sense in pro ductions, Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah was not just Mamat Khalid's 'saviour' but also Tayangan Unggul's, as that is their biggest grosser to date.
Their next offering will be the Osman Ali directed Cun, starring Maya Karin and Remy Ishak.
Leading men and women who are expected to make it big this year too de serve a spot in what to look out for in local entertainment for 2011.
Most bankable leading man Shaheizy Sam, leads the list for starring in the two top grossing movies of the past year. However, following closely will be the un derrated Bront Palarae who scored wins for FFM and Anugerah Skrin last year. Remy Ishak is waiting in the wings. Even though he is fairly green, the young actor is one to look out for.
For leading women, Lisa Surihani and Sharifah Amani received accolades, though our bet is on the latter. Unpredict able as it may be, commercial favourites and Pisau Cukur duo Maya Karin and Nur Fazura may be in the running as well.
TV
Kicking off the calendar year, it's a little hard to predict what dramas and productions will be like for the idiot box.
Still, judging from the fare from Anugerah Skrin, Astro Prima and TV3 (and a wee bit from TV9), we are in for a good year when it comes to TV of ferings.
So let's go to confirmed attention grabbers.
Kicking off January will be Satu-Satunya. Yes, RTM has decided to at tempt a reality-based talent search and the concept is by none other than the loud-mouthed, acid-tongued, Az wan Ali.
Will it work? Well, he wins on hype for sure, at least. On the reality TV tip, Aka demi Fantasia in its ninth year will be interesting to note.
Supposedly in its final year, ratings have so far been slip ping faster than necklines of actresses at awards shows.
Still, a promise has been made, and a total re vamp for what is the final season of the phenomenal show is said to be in the works, including what we hear is possibly the most con troversial choice of a principal (though this remains a work in progress and nothing is con firmed).
A noteworthy men tion will be the re turn of the RIM Chart Show, which is part of RIM's Music Indus try Action Plan. After all, how many shows are there on TV that showcas es music videos from local acts on free-to-air TV?
Homegrown productions are harder to spot when it comes to what will rule the small screen in 2011, though perhaps a TV station will find an other Nur Kasih some how, sometime.--> ADER KE YG BLH BEAT NUR KASIH?... |
