Memang betul pun, dewi = megami...
Kalau dewa = kami, tapi korang kena ingat perkataan kami tu ada 2 maksud tapi berlainan tulisan kanji dier, satu maksudnya dewa ataupun Tuhan dan satu lagi maksudnya kertas...
Korang berminat nak belajar tulisan kanji...? Klik sini untuk senarai Jouyou Kanji yang sering digunakan dalam kehidupan seharian. Secara total, huruf kanji ada 1945 huruf yang disahkan oleh kerajaan Jepun tapi kat sekolah cuma setakat belajar sekitar 850+ jer... |

Salam,
Just want to say that the number of kanji character is much more than 19++. When you're taking the Nihongo Nouryouku Shiken Level 1 (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), you're required to remember 2000 characters while the actual number of Kanji is more than 50,000!!! I think your friend is studying for level 3 as the number of Kanji he learned is lesser than Level 1.
Just some info |

Hai soudesu... Onajidesu. Same function but different interpretation. Less used in normal/real life so if you have the opportunity to talk with Japanese, use -san to be on the safe side. |

That's right, the actual number of kanji characters can be more than 50,000+.
If you study about the history of Japanese writing, there was no certain writing system for Japanese at the beginning untitl the Chinese brought their writing system to Japan. At that time, all kanji characters are accepted in Japanese writing system.
However, after centuries, the Japanese found that it was too hard to memorize all kanji characters. Moreover, there are certain Japanese words which has no kanji wharacters of those words. These words are known as native Japanese words. And that's how hiragana came out.
After Meiji restoration, there were so many Western influences coming into Japan, including new words. However, hiragana can only be used for native Japanese characters, therefore the Japanese came out with their katakana system for imported foreign words except Chinese.
After the World War 2, the Japanese government limited the approved daily kanji to only 1850 characters. In 1980s, the numbers were increased to 1945, known as Jouyou Kanji List. And there are only about 850+ of them learnt in schools. The students have to learn the rest by themselves. |
