Showing touches of his dad

PETALING JAYA: Young shuttler Misbun Ramdan Misbun got off to a stunning start in the Thailand Open GP Gold by ousting third seed Pablo Abian in the first round in Bangkok yesterday.

The lanky Ramdan is one of several back-up shuttlers being groomed for the 2016 Thomas Cup and he certainly showed his potential by taking out world No. 25 Abian 21-14, 21-18 in 29 minutes.

The 21-year-old, who is the son of former national chief coach Misbun Sidek, will face China’s Chen Yuekun next.

Ramdan is not the only back-up shuttler to shine in the first round. Goh Soon Huat grabbed a bit of the limelight when he came back strongly from a game down to beat 14th seed R.M.V. Gurusaidutt of India 18-21, 21-14, 21-13.

Soon Huat, one of the most hardworking shuttlers under Hendrawan’s charge, will face England’s Andrew Smith in the second round.

Eighth seed Chong Wei Feng, boosted by his Thomas Cup Finals selection, eased into the next round after local lad Poodchalat Pisit withdrew while trailing 8-11 in the first game.

Wei Feng was ranked world No. 149 last September but has since shot up to No. 37. He will face Hong Kong’s Wei Nan for a third round spot.

The other singles shuttlers who cleared their first hurdles were Loh Wei Sheng, Mohd Arif Abdul Latif and BJSS youngster Soo Teck Zhi. Independent shuttlers Wong Choong Hann, Chiang Jiann Shiarng, Beryno Wong and Kuan Beng Hong also passed their first tests.

There was, however, disappointment for Chan Kwong Beng, who lost 18-21, 19-21 to South Korean qualifier Lee Hong-je. Kwong Beng’s place in the national squad is now under threat after the below-par performance.

Meanwhile, Ong Jian Guo-Lim Yin Loo were the only Malaysian pair through to the next round after beating Arun Vishnu-Aparna Balan of India 21-14, 21-13 in the mixed doubles. They will face Singapore’s Terry Yeo-Dellis Yuliana next.

Chong Wei’s dad causes stir

By S. ARULLDAS and WINNIE YEOH
Monday June 11, 2012

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The father of national shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei caused a stir when he suddenly stopped his car at the Penang Bridge, leading to speculation that he had intended to commit suicide.

However, Lee Ah Chai, 59, denied that he wanted to kill himself, saying he decided to go to the bridge yesterday morning after finding it difficult to sleep.

“A patrol car stopped nearby and the policemen wanted to see my MyKad. They asked if I was drunk, which I denied. I offered to undergo a breathalyser test,” he added.

Ah Chai, a pensioner, said the policemen then told him he was not supposed to stop at the bridge and took him to the police station.

“It's all just a misunderstanding. I'll look after myself as I want to live to a ripe old age,” he explained in a telephone conversation with state Youth, Sports and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong.

Reporters who were trying to reach Ah Chai after news broke of an alleged suicide attempt by a man said to be Chong Wei's father had sought Ong's help.

Police sources in Bukit Mertajam had earlier revealed that a man had been crying alone along the coastal area near a shopping mall in Bayan Lepas.

They said he was spotted at about 7.30am and police managed to coax him to return to his home on the mainland.

The sources said the man, who cited family problems, was then escorted in his Perodua Viva back via the Penang Bridge when he suddenly stopped his car and walked out. Police then went to get hold of the man.

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Azman Abd Lah said the man was discharged from hospital several hours after being referred for treatment.

He said police had not classified the case as attempted suicide.

Lee Chong Wei memohon keluarganya diberi ruang untuk menguruskan sendiri hal peribadi berhubung dakwaan bapanya cuba membunuh diri awal pagi semalam.
