Koo-Tan go down to South Korean pair in final
By RAJES PAUL

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s world No. 1 pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong had to settle for a runners-up spot in the Swiss Open at Basel yesterday.

But it was still good enough to put them back in the good books of national doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky.

Yesterday, the top seeds squandered a seven-point lead in the second game to lose 18-21, 16-21 to South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong.

It was the unseeded Koreans’ first Super Series title.

As for the Malaysians, it was their first disappointment in the final at Basel after having won it in 2007 and 2009.

Said Rexy: “Koo and Tan muffed up in the second game.

“They had a chance to take the Koreans to a decider but all went wrong for them after taking a 13-6 lead in the second game,” said Rexy in a telephone interview.

“But still, it is a good showing from them here considering that they have lost in the opening round of the All-England.

“At least, they showed better determination to come back here,” he said.

At the All-England last week, they were beaten by eventual champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen of Denmark in the first round.

Yesterday, the Malaysians got off to nervous start and the pumped-up Koreans took advantage of that to race to an impressive 11-4 lead.

Kien Keat was a let-down at the front as he was often troubled at the net while Boon Heong did his best to cover for his partner’s lack of form yesterday.

Despite a better effort to reduce the gap, the Malaysians failed to stop the Koreans from taking the first game at 21-17.

Kien Keat and Boon Heong came charging into the second game with extra fire their bellies to take an 11-6 lead.

But it was not too long before the Koreans snuffed out the fire in the Malaysian side when they weakened the Malaysian defence with their incredible attacking efforts to close the big gap.

They leveled it at 14-14 and that gave them enough confidence to storm past the hapless Malaysians for their first Swiss Open title.

In the men’s singles, Chen Jin nailed his first title of the year when he defeated compatriot

Chen Long 12-21, 21-15, 21-17 in a one-hour game.

China also reigned supreme in the women’s events when Wang Shixian and Du Jing-Tian Qing emerged as the singles and doubles champions.

Only Fairuzizuan or Zakry will get to play in Thomas Cup Finals

KUALA LUMPUR: Only Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari or Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif will get to play in the Thomas Cup Finals, which will be held at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

National chief coach Rexy Mainaky said that based on their performance in the recently-concluded Swiss Open in Basel, “there is only place for one of them”.

At the Swiss Open, the duo went down tamely 12-21,14-21 to Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark in the opening round.

They put up a fight until the first 11 points in the opening game before running out of gas.
The duo had also crashed out in the first round of the Malaysian Open in January.

Rexy said the Swiss Open outing highlighted the duo’s lack of stamina.

“They did well in the opening game but Fairuzizuan and Zakry could not keep pace with the speed of their opponents after a while. They have become slower than the other fast-improving world class players,” said Rexy.
“I cannot field them as a pair in the Thomas Cup Finals for this reason.

“But I can pair one of them up with a younger player. They have the experience and they can complement a younger pair. This is an option for me and I will look into who can best fit into my plan.”

Only world number one Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are confirmed of their spots for the Thomas Cup Finals. The other doubles pairs in the running are Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Lim Khim Wah-Chan Peng Soon.

Malaysia will continue to host Super Series event
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia are safe as the host for the Super Series for the year 2011 but the recently-concluded Swiss Open is in danger of being dropped.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary P. Ganga Rao said yesterday that the Badminton World Federation (BWF) had confirmed that Malaysia would continue to host one of the 12 legs of the Super Series event.

“Nine countries were given the green light to host the event at a recent meeting. But four others were put under the watch list and their status will be reviewed,” said Ganga.

Besides the Swiss Open, the other three tournaments put on the watch list are the China Masters and the India and Hong Kong Opens.

Others given the nod to be part of the Super Series are the Opens in Denmark, China, France, England, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

The BWF, however, have rejected the applications from Australia, Macau, the United States and Vietnam to be hosts.

Kuarantin mereka
