Jiewen set to team up with Tan Fook in mixed doubles
IF all works out well, China抯 Zhang Jiewen is set to play in the mixed doubles event with husband-to-be Choong Tan Fook or she may opt to become a coach with the Malaysian badminton team next year.
The 28-year-old, who won the 2004 Athens Olympics women抯 doubles gold medal with Yang Wei, will tie the knot with the former Malaysian national team抯 doubles shuttler Tan Fook after playing in the All-China Games in December.
Jiewen, who formed the former world number one partnership with Yang Wei, has quit the Chinese national team after crashing out in the quarter-finals of the Beijing Olympics last August.
Currently, the duo from Guangdong Province are playing as independent players together with former compatriots Gao Ling-Wei Yili under the sponsorship of sports equipment firm Victor.
The two pairs will be playing in their first international tournament in five months at the Malaysian Open, which begins today.
Jiewen-Yang Wei are the defending champions and they are seen as the biggest threat to Malaysia抯 top seeds Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty. The two pairs could meet in the quarter-finals.
Jiewen, who was more open about her relationship with Tan Fook since making an announcement for the first time at last year抯 Malaysian Open, said that she was open to the idea of settling down in Malaysia if the deal was good.
揑 have an obligation to play for my province in the All-China Games, which are held once in every four years. They are like the China Olympics. I was the winner with Yang Wei in the Games before we made it to the national team, |
