Sanjay Dutt's freedom may end Oct 20
Probir Pramanik  [Wednesday, October 10, 2007]
Email this article.

Mumbai, Oct 10 (IANS) Days of freedom for Sanjay Dutt, sentenced to six years in jail after conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings case, could end on Oct 20 when he has been asked to appear before a special anti-terror court here.

Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Preventive) Acts (TADA) court judge Pramod Kode has summoned on that day all those sentenced in the case relating to the worst terror attack in India on its financial and entertainment capital Mumbai on March 12, 1993.

As many as 257 people were killed and hundreds injured in the blasts that damaged property worth over Rs.300 million.

The judge Tuesday said he would hand over the copies of the full judgement to the convicts on Oct 18, 19, and 20.

The 48-year-old actor was convicted in November last year for illegal possession of weapons ahead of the blasts and sentenced to a six-year prison term on July 30.

He has been out on interim bail granted by the Supreme Court since Aug 23 on the ground that he had not been served with the full text of the TADA court's judgement.

"Sanjay has been given the last date (Oct 20) as he was the last among the 100-odd convicts to be sentenced," his lawyer Farhana Shah told IANS Wednesday.

"Once the copies of the full text of the judgement are furnished to him and all the others like him who too are on bail on similar grounds, they will have to surrender to the court and be sent to jail again," said Shah, who along with Subash Kanse was part of the defence team.

Dutt, one of top Bollywood actors who won many hearts by his portrayal of likeable mobster in two Munnabhai films, spent 23 days in prison after his sentencing.

He was first lodged in the high-security Arthur Road prison in central Mumbai and then shifted to the Yerawada prison in western Maharashtra's Pune on the night of Aug 2, as the former houses only under-trial prisoners.

In Yerawada jail, the actor had taken up carpentry as his chosen prison labour and was being paid about Rs.20 a day.

Film industry sources say that the actor had over Rs.500 million riding on him till his bail, and has over the past month and a half managed to complete many of his under-production projects.

Along with Dutt, there are 15 convicts who are out on bail, including a few who have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

At 65 Amitabh rules the roost
IANS  [Wednesday, October 10, 2007]
Email this article.

New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) Emerging in the early 70s as the angry young man, he still sways the box office. Amitabh Bachchan, who turns 65 Thursday, has rewritten the rules of superstardom in Hindi film industry. No other actor has enjoyed such iconic status in filmdom.

Currently he is hogging the limelight for all the wrong reasons but despite the controversies surrounding him Amitabh is giving the young actors a run for their money.

Be it television, endorsements, awards or films, he has superseded the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. Even his son Abhishek is not able to match his charismatic persona.

"I am a big fan of Amitabh. I have grown up seeing his films. He is literally 'my hero'. I first met Amitabh Bachchan on the sets of 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'. On my first meeting I told him how happy I was to work with him but after that I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't express my happiness beyond that. What can I wish for him on his birthday - he is an icon, he has got everything," Kajol told IANS.

Quite true. Of all the top actors, Amitabh had the maximum number of releases this year. While Salman had three, Shah Rukh one and Aamir Khan none, Amitabh had six releases in 2007.

Though, most of the films, except "Shootout at Lokhandwala", bombed, it has not dissuaded the actor from experimenting with different roles under new directors who are making a beeline to sign him.

"I don't know if the audiences are ready or not for such films. From the box office results, perhaps not. But for me as an artiste it gave me tremendous creative satisfaction, on par with what I experienced in 'Black'," Amitabh said in a recent interview to IANS.

His latest experiment was with Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh. He teamed up with Ghosh in his English film "The Last Lear", which is based on veteran Bengali actor Utpal Dutt's play "Aajker Shahjahan".

It revolves around an aging Shakespearean actor who takes on one of the bard's most challenging roles. The film was well received at the Toronto Film Festival last month.

Another experimental film by Amitabh, "Eklavya - The Royal Guard", is India's official entry for the Oscars this year. He also received the National Award for best actor from President Pratibha Patil last month for his role in "Black".

His international career is flourishing too. He forays into Hollywood with US-based Indian filmmaker Mira Nair's "Shantaram". In the film the Big B will play underworld don Kadar Bhai and share screen space with Hollywood veteran Johnny Depp, who is also producing the crime thriller.

Unlike many others, the Big B is not in awe of Hollywood and feels it is trying to destroy the local filmmaking culture in India.

He said: "Hollywood, which has power and strength, has destroyed local film industry in Europe and Britain. Now they are coming to India. But we welcome competition."

He also feels that there is nothing wrong with Indian films, which haven't been able to woo non-Indian audiences in the US.

"Nothing is wrong with our cinema's sensibility or the fact that we have song-and-dance. Language is a barrier. It is the same with English films having a limited audience in India."

He is currently busy shooting for Ravi Chopra's "Bhootnath". Apart from that he will be seen in Rumi Jaffery's "God Tussi Great Ho" and Ram Gopal Varma's "Sarkar Raj".

He is also preparing for his first world tour with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya. The Unforgettable Tour, a series of stage shows next year in 18 cities across the world, will also feature Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu, Riteish Deshmukh and choreographer Shiamak Davar.

First look of 'Jodha-Akbar' out this weekend
Subhash K. Jha  [Wednesday, October 10, 2007]
Email this article.

Mumbai, Oct 10 (IANS) Director Ashutosh Gowariker finally breathes a sigh of relief as the theatrical trailer of his period love story "Jodha-Akbar", starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, is unveiled this weekend.

"It's been a gruelling but rewarding time. I've been virtually sleeping on the sets. But, finally, we've zeroed-in on Jan 25 as the release date," Gowariker told IANS.

"It's a good week because we get the full three-day holiday weekend, Republic Day and all."

"Rang De Basanti" was released during the same weekend two years ago.

"Was it?" Gowariker seemed unaware of the coincidence.

"It just seems like the right moment. It's a pity we couldn't make it on schedule on Oct 12."

The director, who earlier made acclaimed films like "Lagaan" and "Swades", still has one song to shoot, which he will do as soon as Aishwarya returns from Boston after shooting her "Pink Panther" movie.

The epic's postponement has given two other biggish films "Laaga Chunari Mein Daag" and "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" a chance to get released on this Friday, just ahead of Eid.

"We aren't attaching the trailer to any of the two films," informed the director. "It goes into theatres independently."

But it is just a coincidence that the "Jodha-Akbar" trailer is being released during the same week that the film was earlier supposed to release?

"You can call it a pleasant coincidence," said the director.

'Fashion' will have Priyanka in new avatar: Madhur Bhandarkar
Subhash K. Jha  [Wednesday, October 10, 2007]
Email this article.

Mumbai, Oct 11 (IANS) Talented filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, who gave a makeover to Bipasha Basu in "Corporate", says his next film "Fashion" will present Priyanka Chopra in a completely different avatar.

"It's substantial and strong. And something she has never done before. Nor has such a character been shown in our cinema. Naturally, she'll be the main protagonist. And her character will have many shades, several ups and downs," Bhandarkar told IANS.

"We'll see the entire fashion industry from her character's point of view. But other characters in 'Fashion' will have equally substantial roles," he added.

The director claims that the film will change his image as well.

"'Fashion' will reinvent my image. It will be real but also intrinsically glossy."

Talking about the delay in the film, he said: "I wanted to take a break to give time to my family after my daughter was born. Also, I'm turning producer with 'Fashion'. It'll be co-produced by UTV and me."

Asked if he felt flattered when films like "It's Breaking News" copy his theme and style, he said: "I'm told films do look at "Corporate" and "Page 3" for inspiration. There's nothing wrong with it. I've also been inspired by so many filmmakers like Gulzar and Ram Gopal Varma."

Nana Patekar's generosity reciprocated
Subhash K. Jha  [Wednesday, October 10, 2007]
Email this article.

Nana Patekar recently surprised the producer of short film "Gubbare" by donating his remuneration to charity organisations.

When producer Sanjay Gupta approached him for a role in the movie, Nana apparently asked for an astronomical remuneration.

"Much higher than anything that we at White Feather pay our stars. Nana was adamant to get that amount. Finally he settled for a little less but a lot more than we had decided on... close to Rs.2 million," said a source from the production house.

After charging what Nana thought to be a fair price, he told the production company to donate the entire amount to three of his favourite charities.

"We were left so stunned," said the source. "So overwhelmed were we by Nana's gesture that we presented Nana with a Rolex gold watch as a token of our appreciation. Nana being an emotional man broke down when he saw the gift, 'I've never worn such an expensive gift,' he sobbed in front of us."

No dearth of actresses for Shahid Kapur
Subhash K. Jha  [Thursday, October 11, 2007]
Email this article.

Mumbai, Oct 11 (IANS) Whatever the truth about the status of his relationship with Kareena Kapoor, one thing is clear - there is certainly no dearth of heroines for Shahid Kapur. The lament, "There're not too many suitable leading ladies for me", no longer seems to hold true.

After the ready-for-release "Jab We Met" with Kareena, it's Aziz Mirza's "Lucky Charm" with Vidya Balan, and then a straight-from-the-heart love story for Rajkumar Santoshi, in which his leading lady is Katrina Kaif.

The prolific Santoshi, who has decided to bring together the untried pair, is currently in the pre-production stage of this romantic quickie.

"I haven't done a simple love story before. Most of my films have been very intense. Now that my Ajay Devgan-Vidya Balan starrer 'Halla Bol' is ready, I just wanted to see what it felt like to direct a boy-meets-girl story," Santoshi told IANS.

Shahid is an actor Santoshi wanted to work with for a while. He earlier planned to bring Shahid and his father Pankaj Kapur together in a comedy but has now decided to go ahead with the love story instead.

"He's got what it takes. And I know Shahid is capable of great intensity in a romance," said Santoshi.

The untitled film hits the floors in early November.

"I hope to complete the film by the end of the year."

Commenting on his forthcoming release "Halla Bol", Santoshi said: "It's my take on an actor's conscience and its awakening. But it isn't preachy or solemn. I've tried to keep the message as entertaining as possible."

The versatile director's much-discussed "Ramayana" project with Ajay as Rama, Kajol as Sita, Riteish Deshmukh as Laxman and Prakash Raj as Ravan has been pushed to the end of 2008.

Ash was third choice for 'Pink Panther' role?
Subhash K. Jha  [Thursday, October 11, 2007]
Email this article.

Mumbai, Oct 11 (IANS) Aishwarya Rai's business manager in LA denies it, but Celina Jaitley says the "Pink Panther" role was sent to her first and then offered to Shilpa Shetty.

"With due respects to Aishwarya and her LA business manager, my work in the US is looked after by Brillstein Grey, who also looks after names like Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Orlando Bloom and Andy Garcia. The script was sent through my agents. And then it was also sent to Shilpa Shetty. I'm aware of that," Celina told IANS.

Finally, the role fell into Aishwarya's lap and she is currently shooting for it in Boston.

"I'm not aware of where the project went after that. Nor am I interested in getting into a slanging match over a film that I didn't do. I'd rather talk about what I'm doing," said Celina whose international career is flourishing.

She is all set to play the mythical beauty Sheherzade in the international project "The Quest of Sheherzade". For the petite beauty, the most exciting part of this fantasia-project is the rugged action.

"It's a role that requires extensive stunts. Fortunately, my father is an army officer. I learnt horse riding in school. But doing so without a saddle requires plenty of training. And I'm off to the US in Feb 2008. Shooting starts probably in Turkey next summer."

"The Sheherzade" role sounds quite a lot like what Aishwarya did in her just-released international project "The Last Legion".

Celina has just completed another international project called "Love Has No Language".

"It's directed by first-timer Ken Khan who was involved with the 'Lord Of The Rings' project. It's an out-and-out romantic film."

Celina is candid enough to admit she didn't get along too well with her Australian co-actor Ben Mitchell, a TV star from the soaps "Shortland Streets" and "Neighbours".

"Out there in New Zealand they look for a hectic social life after work. I've gone through late night partying in college. I don't need that any more. I'm very much a home bird, very dull and ordinary. So, yes, Ben and I just faced the camera and went our separate ways."

Rohan Sippy determined to cast Ash opposite John
Subhash K Jha  [Thursday, October 11, 2007]
Email this article.

Mumbai, Oct 11 (IANS) Aishwarya Rai is reluctant to do a non-Abhishek Bachchan love story. But producer Rohan Sippy is very keen to have her in his film and is planning to fly to Boston this week to convince her.

Sriram Raghavan, who is directing the yet untitled film, told IANS: "The project is a love story which I need to go into right away in the first week of November. John's dates are in place. He can't give us dates after January 2008. Aishwarya is shooting in Boston and Rohan is flying to meet her. Hopefully, things will be in place once he returns.

"Ramu (Ram Gopal Varma) showed me a promo of 'Sarkar Raj'. Aishwarya's performance just blew my mind. I really want to work with her."

The film's male lead John is also eager to be cast opposite Aishwarya. He believes they'd make a very handsome screen pair. And when their first celluloid coupling in Raghavan's "Happy Birthday" fell apart, John was bitterly disappointed to lose out on an eminently viable co-star.

Things worked out pretty smoothly after the Birthday fiasco. Raghavan, who has just released a fascinating noire film "Johnny Gaddaar", was quickly convinced by John to launch another project with Aishwarya.

However, Aishwarya, currently shooting in Boston for "Pink Panther 2", has serious second thoughts.

"Aishwarya opted out of Karan Johar's film because she didn't want to play a woman who has a multiplicity of men in her life. Now in Sriram's film she'd rather not do an intense romance with John," said a source.

"After marriage Aishwarya's personal and professional priorities have changed completely. She was always conscious of her image. Now she'll do nothing that would even remotely compromise her position as the Bachchan daughter-in-law," added the source.

Rohan remains convinced Aishwarya is the right choice for Raghavan's film. He flies to Boston for an emergency meeting with the actress, hoping to convince Aishwarya, who played the main lead with Abhishek in his debut film "Kuch Naa Kaho", of the project's urgent need of her presence.

Until the producer's return, everyone on the project has their fingers crossed.
