SHARAPOVA VS HALEP: THE BATTLE FOR NO.2
CINCINNATI, OH, USA - There's something very, very big on the line at the Western & Southern Open this week, something that could have some major implications at the last Grand Slam of the year.
Simona Halep has a shot at taking the No.2 ranking from Maria Sharapova.
It wouldn't be a new career-high for Halep - she's been No.2 before. The reason it would have major implications is that the US Open seeds are made off of next week's WTA Rankings, and whoever is No.2 will thus be guaranteed not to face the World No.1, Serena Williams, until the final in New York.
So how can Halep take No.2 from Sharapova in Cincy? Here are the two scenarios:
Scenario 1
If Sharapova wins her opening match...
... Halep will take No.2 by winning the title.
Scenario 2
If Sharapova loses her opening match...
... Halep will take No.2 by reaching the final.
Also, Sharapova and Halep are in the same half of the draw, so if they meet in the semifinals, it won't necessarily be a battle for No.2 - as in Scenario 1, Halep would not only need to win that semifinal match against Sharapova, she would need to go on to win the title as well to rise to World No.2.
And, by the way, the two players played in Cincy last year - watch highlights from that match above.
Just how important is it for both Sharapova and Halep to avoid Williams at the US Open?
Both have expressed their admiration for the 21-time Grand Slam champion in recent weeks.
"I just really admire her," Halep said during her run to the final in Toronto last week.
"She's still playing so well and winning so many tournaments. It's nice to have a player you can learn many things from. I always watch her. I admire her ambition, and she's so competitive during matches and loves to be World No.1. I'm competitive too, so I'm able to take many things from watching her."
"When she plays me, she takes me out of my game," Sharapova said after losing to Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals. "That's why she's in the position she's in. I don't think it's a secret. I think she knows against certain players she needs to bring out her best. The way that she plays Azarenka, myself, maybe a few others, she brings it on the line. And we know we have to bring it, too." |

SHARAPOVA TALKS SERENA IN CINCINNATI
CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Maria Sharapova had to miss her first scheduled stop of the summer hardcourt season in Toronto last week due to a right leg strain, but she's back in Cincinnati this week for the Western & Southern Open. And on Monday she met the press for the All Access Hour.
One of the hot topics was, of course, Serena Williams and her chance at history in a few weeks as she goes for the Calendar Year Grand Slam and tries to tie Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22 majors.
Sharapova, one of Williams' fiercest rivals over the last decade, had nothing but praise for her.
"Consistency is very underrated - in this sport it goes a long way - and to keep such a high level and bring it event after event, no matter what match you're playing, it's an incredible power to do that," Sharapova said. "We speak about the physicality she has on court and her presence, but as an athlete, and just as a normal human being, you have days where you're just off and things are not working.
"The fact that she brings it her whole career, and that she's at this point, is just incredible."
Sharapova is widely regarded as one of the biggest fighters in the history of women's tennis, certainly on par with Williams, but she says that Williams has something extra that nobody else has.
"It's the competitive element that's so unique in any sport. We're all competitors, we all want to win," she said. "But she definitely has that extra gear that everyone looks to get in those situations when you're down and things aren't working, or when you're up and want to keep that level up."
The Russian has put together an absolutely legendary career herself, though. She has five Grand Slam titles in her career - Wimbledon in 2004, the US Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008 and two French Opens in 2012 and 2014 - and is a former World No.1, currently World No.2 behind Williams.
And now she's ready to make her comeback to the courts for the first time since Wimbledon.
"I always enjoy the little break we get after Wimbledon," Sharapova told reports on Monday. "I think it's a nice time. I love summer. I've been training, but enjoying it a little bit with friends too. I like those weeks between the grass and the hard, and just kind of resettling and working on a few things, but also being able to take your mind off the grind of the schedule and the travelling we do on the tour.
"Unfortunately I needed a little bit more time because I hurt my leg in training. I had a few tough weeks and then a little bit of a setback, and it came right before I was supposed to fly, but I'm feeling better now. I'm still working through it a little bit, but I'm feeling better than I did just a week ago.
"My schedule's already quite short in terms of what I play, and that tournament was definitely one I wanted to be a part of, but sometimes you just have to readjust based on where you are." |

American Express Teams Up with Maria Sharapova For U.S. Open Campaign
![](http://si.wsj.net/public/resources/images/BN-JW140_MariaC_G_20150814152426.jpg)
Ms. Sharapova has signed a two-year partnership with American Express for this year and next year’s U.S. Open, marking the first time the company has worked with the tennis star. Financial terms of Ms. Sharapova’s partnership with American Express weren’t disclosed. In addition to appearing in the virtual reality tennis game, Ms. Sharapova will appear in out-of-home ads starting Monday that promote the services American Express is offering on and off-site at this year’s tournament.
“Maria in a lot of ways is an embodiment of our customer,” said Ms. Curtis, adding that the company looks for celebrity partners that have stories that inspire its customers. “She’s a card member, a business owner, a philanthropist.”

The ads, which highlight Ms. Sharapova’s competitive spirit, will appear in locations along the route fans take to the U.S. Open in New York City, such as Grand Central Station, the 7 subway train headed to the tournament, the U.S. Open boardwalk and the Citi Field LIRR station. The creative is a continuation of American Express’s “Journey Never Stops” campaign that launched in February.
Ms. Curtis said the company is thinking about ways to partner with Ms. Sharapova beyond the U.S. Open and noted it worked with the tennis star to create a curated guide of New York City attractions for U.S. Open attendees.
The company’s “fan experience” activation at the U.S. Open will also include meet and greets with other tennis stars, radio earpieces for card holders that provide live commentary and match updates from ESPN, and U.S. Open-themed Twitter debates with tennis players John Isner and Monica Puig. |
