Expect bigger bargains at this year's Great Singapore Sale

NEWER and bigger carrots, such as $15 deals for everything from apparel to watches, are being dangled by organisers of the country's annual shopping binge, which begins today.
Other highlights of the two-month-long Great Singapore Sale (GSS) include new themed tours which will allow people to traipse along the shopping routes less travelled and pick up bargains in areas such as Hong Kah town centre and Tampines.
But bargains will be the order of the day, and with Singaporeans cutting back on spending because of the rising cost of everything from rice to roti prata, GSS organisers and retailers are promising that these will be bigger and better this year.
For instance, selected outlets, including spas, boutiques and cafes, will be hawking wares at $15 - to mark the 15th anniversary of the GSS.
The executive director of the Singapore Retailers Association, Ms Lau Chuen Wei, also predicts that this year's sale will see outlets giving higher-than-usual discounts, starting from about 60 per cent.
But just in case Singaporeans do not bite hard enough, businesses are also banking on the tourist dollar more.
At least 30 per cent more retailers than last year are working with the Singapore Tourism Board to offer tourist discounts.
The board is also promoting tourist-exclusive deals, where visitors receive rebates, vouchers and free gifts on top of its Tourist Privilege Card, which gives them significant discounts.
But Ms Lau promises that the action will still be focused on Singaporeans, who make up about 80 per cent of most retailers' business.
Retailers, also hit by escalating rental and staff costs, are banking on the GSS - one of the two bigger shopping events in the year, along with the Christmas season - for a boost.
And to keep the crowds coming, 11 malls across the island, from Paragon Shopping Centre to Jurong Point, will take turns to stay open till 11pm or midnight.
Other highlights of the sale include the Singapore Press Holdings' Shop and Win contest, where shoppers who spend $30 in a single receipt at participating outlets can take part in a lucky draw.
Besides a MasterCard promotion where shoppers can stand a chance to win $100,000, a shopping challenge - where teams will compete against one other in a race of sorts - will also be held in Orchard Road tomorrow. |
