KUALA LUMPUR: The world of badminton is bracing for a change in the scoring format.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) have sent a directive to all their members to try out two different versions of the 11-point best-of-five-game scoring format until their council meeting next May.
The 5x11 system will either be set to a maximum of 15 points or to a three-point decider when the score reaches 10-all.
Under the first option, if the score is tied at 10-10, the first player to get a two-point lead wins. If they are tied at 14-14, the one who reaches 15 points first is the winner.
Under the second option, if the score is tied at 10-all, a three-point challenge is played (?). The one to score the first three points will win the game 11-10.
There will be a one-minute break between games for both options.
Malaysia are already trying out the first option – the 15 points maximum – at the ongoing Celcom Axiata Malaysia International Youth Under-19 in Terengganu.
“The world body have not made it compulsory, but they’ve given the members the options to try it out. We are experimenting with it ... we will review and assess the format after the tournament,” said Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary Ng Chin Chai.
Malaysia also tried out another version of the 11-point best-of-five-game scoring format at the Malaysia International Youth Under-19 in Sabah in 2014.
Under that format, when the score was tied at 10-10, the first player to reach 11 points won the match. But BWF withheld experimenting with the format as they did not want to disrupt the players’ preparation for the Rio Olympic Games.
The current 21-point best-of-three-game scoring format was introduced 10 years ago.
