Boon Heong to partner Hendra or Yong-dae?
BY RAJES PAUL
ODENSE: Independent shuttler Tan Boon Heong is set to partner an Olympic gold medal winner.
And it could be one of these two: the 32-year-old Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia or the 28-year-old South Korean Lee Yong-dae.
Both have won Olympic gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Yong-dae won in mixed doubles with Lee Hyo-jung while Hendra won with Markis Kido in men’s doubles.
Hendra also lifted the world title three times – once with Markis in 2007 and twice with Mohd Ahsan in 2013 and 2015.
Boon Heong is looking for a partner following Koo Kien Keat’s announcement that he will call it quits at the end of this year.
The 29-year-old Boon Heong still yearns to become an Olympic and world champion and he’s hoping to achieve it with a new partner. “It will be nice to partner an Olympic or world champion. I have not won these titles but, maybe, I can do it with a partner who has won it before,” said Boon Heong.
“I know that Yong-dae has quit the national team and Hendra is likely to turn professional soon. Nothing has been finalised yet.”
Boon Heong has partnered both shuttlers before. He paired up with Yong-dae in the Malaysian Purple League last year and with Hendra during invitational matches in China.
On Wednesday, Boon Heong-Kien Keat’s challenge at the Denmark Open came to an end at the Odense Sports Park.
The 2006 Asian Games gold medallists went down 11-21, 18-21 to Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia in the opening round.
“As independent shuttlers, Kien Keat and I have won the Dutch Open. It has been good while it lasted,” said Boon Heong, who came very close to winning the world title with Kien Keat at the 2010 meet in Paris before losing to Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun of China.
Boon Heong’s next assignment is not on the badminton court – but at the registration office where he will get married to his long-time sweetheart Sherlyn Tan Yean Ling on Monday.
Then, he will play with Kien Keat in the China Open and Hong Kong Open next month before starting his new journey with an Olympic champion in the men’s doubles.
~ tan boon heong and wife ... congratulations !!!!
