KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor says he declares his assets’ to the Prime Minister every year but will not make it public for fear of being targeted by criminals. “I used to be a businessman and I have a lot of assets. I am also afraid if I declare it, my children and wife may be kidnapped. Anything can happen; people could rob us,” the Federal Territories Minister said. “As for the mayor, he declares his assets to the Chief Secretary of the Government,” he said. His remarks came about after PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil’s statement on Aug 19 saying that Tengku Adnan and the Kuala Lumpur mayor should lead by example and declare their assets following the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) arrest of a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) senior official.
The man was one of three high ranking officials detained by MACC last week on suspicion of accepting bribes, misuse of power and money laundering involving RM13mil. Speaking to reporters yesterday after attending the launch of the National Defence Medical Centre Worldwide Alumni Convention here, Tengku Adnan said he had instructed the mayor and DBKL to discuss with MACC on declaring assets. “DBKL will be sharing information on how much assets, account names and so on in the coming week. This will apply to the ministry, Putrajaya and Labuan,” he added. In response to a suggestion from Transparency International Malay-sia that the Government should practise the open tender system instead of selective or restricted tenders in awarding public projects, Tengku Adnan said the ministry was already subscribing to this except for projects that required specialists. “All tenders for projects are on an open tender basis. But sometimes, open tender raises problems when contractors offer low prices but the project was not completed at a specified time that we had hoped for. “This incurs a higher cost for the Government.” The Government, he said, no longer carried out direct negotiations. “But we do at times give out selected tender based on the expertise of the contractors, and if doing so can reduce costs.”
