Support grows for Sultan Ibrahim and Bangsa Johor concept
JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru Tiong-Hua Association and five main Chinese clan associations in the state have pledged their support for Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar and the Bangsa Johor concept.
The Sultan of Johor had strongly rebuked Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over the former prime minister’s disapproval of the Bangsa Johor concept.
According to Johor Baru Tiong-Hua Association president Datuk Seri Tey Kim Chai, the concept would only unite the people regardless of race and religion instead of dividing them as claimed by Dr Mahathir.
He said the Bangsa Johor concept was part of Johor's history for generations, dating back to the 1920s when it was first introduced.
"Our sultans have always shown care and love for their people, which sets good example for us to follow in their footsteps to keep us united," he said at a press conference here on Friday.
He added the concept was something Johoreans held in high regard especially during recent times when extremist views and political instability were common.
“Sultan Ibrahim has also set a fine example when he attended the annual Chingay procession this year and in 2006, knowing full well that it was a religious-based event because he believed in respecting each other’s cultures and practices,” he said.
Leaders from the five main Chinese clan associations - Hakka, Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese and Fuchou - were present at the press conference.
Meanwhile, the Johor Coalition of Malay Rights Groups Council (Gabung) had requested for Dr Mahathir to retract his statement made against the Bangsa Johor concept. Its president Zaini Atan said he represented thousands of people in voicing their support for Sultan Ibrahim and the concept that was unique to Johor. “Bangsa Johor is a state political identity that promotes unity and goodwill among the multiracial society,” he said in a gathering attended by various organisations at a restaurant here. “This is a very sensitive issue to the people of Johor and Gabung will always support the Johor Ruler regarding such matters,” he said. Dr Mahathir claimed that parochialism, including the Bangsa Johor concept, would divide Malaysians, which could result in the break-up of the federation.
