Khoo Lay Foon, a former prostitute, had duped her childhood friend into travelling to Australia thinking it was a holiday – but instead extorted her.
Based in Perth, she took away her friend’s passport and forced her to work in a brothel to pay the $1900 (RM6447) Khoo made for the travel arrangements.
The District Court heard the victim who thought it would be a 10-day holiday in December 2015, was taken to an East Perth brothel upon arrival.
According to Perth Now, Prosecutor Lisa Boston said Khoo trapped her friend into working as a prostitute so she could make money from her and took her passport so she could extort her.
The report reveals Khoo even sent a text message to the brothel owner before her friend arrived in Perth telling the “lady boss” about her “young and very pretty” friend.
Unfamiliar with Australian law, the friend thought she had no choice but to do as she was told, not until she contacted a friend who told her otherwise, and upon leaving the brothel the following day, she went to the police.
Based on the report, Khoo told police the victim had asked to be taken to a brothel after she arrived in Perth because she owed a lot of money to loan sharks and was escaping Malaysia – so Khoo became her saving grace.
Although Khoo admitted to arranging the victim’s travels and sending her to a brothel, she denied confiscating her friend’s passport and deceiving her about her stay.
It was also alleged that Khoo helped women move to Australia so they could work at brothels in Perth. -mD
