Mufti admits kids brought to Perlis to be unilaterally converted, didn’t check where mother was
Thursday, 17 Feb 2022 04:12 PM MYT
BY RADZI RAZAK
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — Perlis Mufti Datuk Mohd Asri Zainul has admitted yesterday that the state had unilaterally converted three underaged children of Loh Siew Hong without her knowledge nor presence.
Mohd Asri said the children’s father had brought the children to be converted at the Perlis Religious Department in July 2020 without knowing the mother’s whereabouts, and the department had taken his word for it.
“When asked where their mother was, the father said he didn’t know. He wanted to request that his children become Muslim. So the religious department registered them as Muslim. They weren’t registered at the National Registration Department.
“Their father brought them. We didn’t research where their mother was. Their father said he did not know where their mother was, so we let them become Muslim,” he said in a video posted on his Facebook yesterday.
Yesterday, Loh had sent a letter of demand to the Islamic councils in three states to provide written proof that she consented to the religious conversion of her three young children who were raised as Hindus.
Lawyer Shamsher Singh Thind, who is representing Loh, said the three religious councils of Perlis, Kedah and Penang have been given seven days starting February 16 to provide the documents proving she had consented to their conversion.
Asri also said the Perlis religious authorities were not aware that the Kuala Lumpur High Court had granted Loh full custody of her children in March 2021. At the time, the children were in Perlis.
He said the children had been brought to Perlis before the court’s letter on the matter “reached their hands”.
“The court letter was between her and her husband, it wasn’t addressed to us.”
“The children were converts, the father was in jail, so we took care of them. Then we heard that someone wanted to take them. We continued looking after them because we didn’t know about the court order,” he said.
However, Asri said the father was jailed for drug offences several months after their conversion that the Perlis religious authorities had no qualms with handing over the children to Loh, if that was what they wanted.
“If they want to return to their mother, we have no problem. The problem is that the children don’t want to,” he said.
The video showed Asri being asked to comment on the matter as it courted controversy and criticisms from several quarters.
The Perlis mufti denied any wrongdoings on his part, instead accused “DAP, activists and the media” of playing up the issue.
Yesterday, Bernama reported her meeting with her three children at a welfare institution under the Perlis Social Welfare Department yesterday, according to the Women, Family And Community Development (KPWKM) Ministry.
In a statement, KPWKM said the meeting took place in the afternoon.
On Monday, Malay Mail reported Loh, a single mother who has been searching for her three children, who were taken away from her by a third party.
Loh said her children were taken from her after she had divorced from her husband on March 19, 2019 at the same time she was hospitalised due to a fractured leg.

Pasal dr maza jumpa bebudak ni and diorg kata tak nak balik kat mak n si mak pulak kata masa jumpa anak2, diorg nak balik kat dia...susah nak percaya..aku rasa bebudak ni bila jumpa mak, diorg takut terus ckp mcm tu..bila jumpa dr asri takut diapa2kan terus ckp mcm ni..

A mother should not be separated from her children, says Penang mufti as debate grows over latest unilateral conversion case

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 17 — Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor has called on the authorities to find a way for Hindu mother, Loh Siew Hong, to regularly meet with her three children who were said to have been unilaterally converted to Islam.
He said the bonds between a mother and her children should never be severed due to differences in religion.
“I do not want to take sides in this case but it is my understanding based on Islamic teachings, the Quran and Hadith of the Prophet that a bond between a mother and her children should never be broken,” he said in a brief statement when Malay Mail contacted him today for comment.
He stressed that Islam is a beautiful, just and religion of grace that emphasises on being caring and tolerant among each other.
“The question of which religion that one embraces is up to the respective individual,” he said.
He stressed that the embracing of Islam is dependent on guidance from Allah.
“In Islam, there is no question of force in embracing the religion and this is what we want everyone to understand,” he said.
Wan Salim was commenting on the issue of Loh, who was given limited time to visit her three children who were allegedly unilaterally converted to Islam.
The three children, a son aged 10 and twin daughters 14 years old, are currently under the care of the Perlis Welfare Department pending Loh’s habeas corpus application hearing on February 21.
Loh, a single mother who is currently on unpaid leave from her job as a chef in Genting Highlands, Pahang, had been separated from her three children since 2019 following her hospitalisation.
The children’s father took them away before he was jailed for a drug offence. They were later taken in by a third party from an Islamic non-governmental organisation without Loh’s knowledge or consent.
Loh was granted full custody of all her three children by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in January 2021.
She was able to meet her children briefly on February 14 at the Kangar district police headquarters in Perlis.

Nagahswaran kini menjalani hukuman penjara atas kesalahan berkaitan dadah.
anak2nya Islam. Baru skrg ni bapanya dipenjara atas kes dadah.
So kat mana yg dikatakan tiada mendapat kebenaran.
diluar negara mengatakan orang2 Hindu dipaksa memeluk Islam, beribu2 kuil Hindu dimusnahkan
diMsia dan banyak lagi FITNAH2 yg memburukkan Msia.
Peegidahhh tambii suka buat fitnah...

As Dr.Maza always preach in his teachings ' Mufti pun ada buat silap'. So...Dr.Maza, please walk the talk. Admit your mistake. |

bapaknye abusive.
mahkamah beri hak penjagaan pada ibu.
sebelum court order sampai ke tangan, paknye dah bawa lari anak ke perlis.
culik yang halal maybe sbb tak sempat terima court order
budak2 ni jawapan ikut siapa org tu... bapaknye tanya offcourse nak ke bapak. mak dia tanya, nak ke mak.. tak hairan sbb maybe takut kene marah/pukul lagi2 bapaknye ada history pendera
bytheway, kalau budak2 ni betul percaya allah, alhamdulillah cuma why la tak bincang baik2 dgn maknye.
dari maknye kata tak kisah anak dia nak agama apa pon, sekarang maybe dah tertutup hati.
kalau elok2 caranye, aku yakin mak dia syukur je sbb kita dah jaga anak depa elok2 sewaktu mereka susah

by the way, mufti penang dah minta maaf
Mufti P Pinang mohon maaf atas komen berkait isu pengislaman anak Loh
