Photographer Diana Markosian, working at the Moscow agency in 2010, asked to be sent to Chechnya. Diana, who grew up in Russia, but was studying in the U.S. at that time was only twenty years old, she was interested in the history of the infamous region.
"The agency has refused to send me to Chechnya, so I decided to go there myself. Terrible was my goal, and then home. "
After the first visit, Diana went back to Chechnya, where many of her colleagues, she confessed, did not want to go. In November last year, Diana finally moved here. According to her, to live and work in Chechnya is risky and dangerous, are very frequent cases of kidnapping of girls. Although the Russian authorities, saying that after more than a decade of wars, peaceful life in the region improved, but this is not true.
In his photo project Markosyan tried to demonstrate the lives of girls living in Chechnya. "It's one thing to come here for a week, as I did before. It is quite another - to stay here and feel the experience of local girls. "
Chechnya after the collapse of the Soviet Union experienced a wave of Islamization. For local residents became mandatory wearing of clothing appropriate religious canons, frequent polygamy and early marriage, attitudes towards women in men has become more conservative. The head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov has said publicly that women are the property of their husbands.
In addition to religious restrictions Chechen life is complicated by social conditions. In the republic there is a high level of unemployment. Many young girls, even as mothers are forced to live with their parents.
Diana had to change their approach to work, because the local people treated her with suspicion and fear to show it to your everyday life. For example, a seemingly innocent picture smoking woman can have detrimental effects on smokers.
Markosyan had to spend a week next to the "models", before she managed to make at least a shot. Those girls and women, which it included in its design, are a reflection of ongoing processes in Chechnya. A. Date
