PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has broken her silence on her reluctance to join the Save Malaysia movement.
Speaking to Malay Mail Online, Wan Azizah said the goal of the movement should not be limited to solely removing Najib Razak as prime minister but demanding for institutional reforms, as well as an end to corruption.
Wan Azizah also said former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who masterminded the Citizens’ Declaration, had to accept the fact that in the event Najib steps down, it was up to the voters, and not him alone, to decide on who should lead the country next.
“Controlling mindsets only represent the old order,” she said.
The Permatang Pauh MP also slammed Mahathir, who in a recent interview with The Australian, said her husband Anwar Ibrahim, currently imprisoned for sodomy, lacked the morals and was too old to lead the country.
“I regret Dr Mahathir should choose to continue to express rancour and venom against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. This persists despite Anwar’s magnanimity in forgiving Mahathir’s previous excesses but when he (Mahathir) chose to repeat the scurrilous attacks on Anwar’s character using the same institutions he had helped control and wield influence over, and now chooses to attack, I think that is nothing short of being unacceptable,” said the PKR President.
Wan Azizah’s refusal to participate in the Save Malaysia movement had been a question mark, even to her Pakatan Harapan colleagues, since the signing of the Citizens’ Declaration on March 4.
