IMAMS reminded the country yesterday about the dangers of liquor and both the religious and state ban on trading in the commodity even if the buyers are non-Muslims.
In the sermon during the Friday prayer, the imams pointed out that the government of His Majesty Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has rulings on the trading as well as the prohibition for Muslims to possess khamr.
The khutbah (sermon) quoted Surah Al-Qassas : 77) which says, "But seek, with that (wealth) which Alla{aci}h has bestowed on you, the home of the Hereafter, and forget not your portion of legal enjoyment in this world, and do good as Alla{aci}h has been good to you, and seek not mischief in the land. Verily, Alla{aci}h likes not the Mufsidu{aci}n (those who commit great crimes and sins, oppressors, tyrants, mischief-makers, corrupts)."The sermon also quoted a hadith: "Anas ibn Malik narrated that the Messenger of Alla{aci}h (peace and blessing be upon him) invoked the curse of Alla{aci}h on 10 people in connection with khamr (wine or any intoxicant) 1. The wine-presser, 2. The one who has it pressed, 3. The one who drinks it, 4. The one who conveys it, 5. The one to whom it is conveyed, 6. The one who serves it, 7. The one who sells it, 8. The one who benefits from the price paid for it, 9. The one who buys it, 10. The one for whom it is bought." (related by Al-Tirmidhi)
"Muslims who are involved in the selling of khamr will be cursed by Alla{aci}h even if the buyers are not Muslims," the sermon went on.
The imams also revealed the sad fact that, as shown by the statistics on raid on liquor trading, those who have been found to have smuggled or sold or possessed the intoxicant happened to be local Muslim Malays.
The state rulings on the issue are wise and in accordance to the teaching of Islam, which is the official faith of the country.
"O you who believe! Intoxicant (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, AlAnsa{aci}b, and AlAzla{aci}m (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Syaitan's (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful. Syaitan (Satan) wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicant (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Alla{aci}h and from As-Sala{aci}t (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain?" (Surah Al-Maaidah : 90-91)
The imams explained that khamr is ruled religiously unlawful because the substance destructs one's mind, conduct, and prevents one from thinking of Alla{aci}h, so that Alla{aci}h curses those people along with people who worship idols and gamble.
The imams explained that intoxicant leads to other vices including adultery and even violence such as murders.
The imams recounted a story related in the book called Jauharul Mawhub about a man who had been spending much of his life worshipping God. Syaitan came to him appearing as someone who was even more devout in his worship. The first man asked how the other person could be even more devout. Syaitan told the first man to commit adultery and then kill someone and repent so that "you will taste how delicious worship is".
The first man said he could never bring himself to do such abomination. So Syaitan gave him liquor, which he called to be a lighter vice. The man drank it, and took the woman who sold the khamr to bed, and then killed her.
"Khamr in all forms is the mother and cause of all vices," the imams said.
"As Muslims we must ensure that none of our family members and the community ever come close to it. Hopefully, we can then live under the protection and guidance of Alla{aci}h."

WHEN did Bruneians first fly? According to local civil aviation historians, the first airplane to fly over Brunei was a seaplane spotted over Tutong in 1922. Nobody knew whose plane that was.
Before the current modern international airport in Berakas, not many people knew that 70 years ago, prior to WWII, there was no airfield whatsoever in the entire country of Brunei, let alone an airport.
The first runway was constructed during the Japanese occupation in WWII at the current Old Airport Government Buildings Complex. It was then used by the Japanese fighter planes to defend their occupied territory.
After the war, the same Allied Forces which had shelled the runway heavily, repaired and improved it, and a proper airport was planned and built.
The first commercial air transport in Brunei Darussalam began in 1953 with the establishment of internal air service links connecting Pekan Brunei or Brunei Town with Anduki near the oil town of Seria, in Belait.
Getting to Kuala Belait or Seria from Pekan Brunei was very difficult. It was not until the early 1960s that the road connecting the three districts was finally completed.
In those days, driving to Kuala Belait from Pekan Brunei was a whole day affair. Cars had to travel via the coast, and travelling had to take into account the tides and the conditions of the beaches and waves.
The first flights were to the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah to accommodate travellers from Labuan in Sabah and Lutong in Sarawak.
Visit the Brunei Government's Printing Department at the "Old Airport Complex", thus called because the old Brunei Airport was there. That department now occupies what used to the Brunei Airport Terminal Building including the tower. The building evokes nostalgic memories to elderly Bruneians.
Most Bruneians who had to travel overseas for their studies had to fly via Jesselton (now named Kota Kinabalu) to catch a connecting flight to Singapore.
At first it was the Malayan Airways using de Havilland Dragon Rapide aircraft that operated flights between Brunei Town, Anduki, Miri and Labuan with over 4,300 passengers using the Brunei Airport in 1955.
Brunei Airport then was only able to serve airplanes like the de Havilland, the small Douglas DC3s and, later, the Fokker Friendships. These planes were all twin-engined turbo props.
The Anduki Airport in Seria in the meantime played a very significant role in the aviation history of Brunei. Constructed soon after the end of the Second World War, it served the Shell company operating in Seria.
It was completed sometime in 1951 and the first plane to land there was a Vickers Supermarine, also known as the Sea Otter.
The Sea Otter was a versatile airplane, it could land both on the water as well as on dry land.
Before Anduki was built, the Sea Otters were flown from Lutong in Miri _ a wartime Japanese-built airport _ and landed somewhere near Seria.
One of the interesting experiences for British expatriates coming to work for Shell in Seria was that their maiden air flight tended to be in Brunei.
After the World War and the 1950s, the expatriates and their families would arrive by ship and dock in Labuan. Then the Sea Otters would fly them from Labuan to Kuala Belait and, for many, those Sea Otter flights would be the first of their lives.
The Sea Otter played a very significant role in Brunei aviation before being replaced by the Percival P.50 Prince.
In the 1970s air travel became extremely popular. The old Brunei Airport was swamped with activity, operating beyond its capacity. This prompted the authorities to scout for a new site to build a modern airport, in order to cater to the needs of the growing number of users.
Construction for the new Brunei International Airport which we all use currently in Berakas began in 1970 and was completed in 1974. Our own national airline, Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) was also born in November 1974.
Thanks to the early planners in Brunei Darussalam, we are now able to enjoy the fruits of their skyward vision.

THE Royal Brunei Police Force convincingly beat their opponents from the Singapore Police Force in six friendly games of badminton at the Royal Brunei Police Force's headquarters yesterday, winning five games to the Singaporeans' one.
The Bruneians' only defeat of the day came in the women's doubles, when their pair of ASP Zaila-Insp Mareesa lost 15-4, 15-6 to the Singaporean duo of Insp Yolanda Yu and Insp Angela Eng.
With two games played simultaneously, the highlight of the day came in the first game when Supt Pg Ishak-Insp Sawal blew past ASP Gordon Toh-Insp Mohtar Mat Amin 15-1, 15-9 in just 16 minutes in one of the three men's veteran doubles games contested.
Their calm and assured style of play saw them force the Singaporeans to scramble all over the court, with Pg Ishak's experience and awareness paving the way for their win in the first set.
Though they lost concentration in the second set, they regained their composure mid-way through the match and rallied to a 15-9 win.
In the two other men's veteran doubles matches, ASP Zainuddin-Snr Insp Adenan recorded a 17-15,15-2 win over ASP Bernard Quek-ASP Teoh Chim Tien. This was followed by a 15-6,15-6 win for Supt Muhammad-Insp Pg Wahab against DSP Richard Lim-ASP Chua Eng Hwee.
ACP Abd Rahim-ACP Pg Wahab beat DAC Cheong Keng Kheong-DSP Tan Kheng Seng 15-5,15-8 in the doubles of the VVIP men's event, and Snr Insp Pg Aziz-Insp Sawal won the men's open doubles with a 15-5, 15-9 win over DSP Alan Samuel and Insp Mark Yeo.
The Director of the Royal Brunei Police Forces' Operations Pehin Orang Kaya Pendikar Alam Hj Hasrin Hj Sabtu, who was the guest of honour at the event, presented prizes to the winners.
The competition is part of a series of activities which the Singapore Police Force are participating in with their Bruneian counterparts. Other activities include golf, netball and football.The Brunei Times

Bandar Seri Begawan - B$10 million maximum fine and 10 years in jail seem not to hinder people in getting involved in the fraudulent Internet investment schemes.
Similar to the previous get-rich-quick schemes appearing more than 10 years ago, the current scam has turned a new leaf and appears to have broader reach thanks to the Internet.
The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has already cautioned the public on these investment schemes being offered via the Internet.
Malaysia now is also cautioning its people on the dangers of these fake cyber investment schemes after many lost their deposits alter taking part in it.
It is very surprising however that we have not heard of anyone really 'getting rich' just from sitting down in front of the computer and waiting for their money to grow rapidly.
Again, through the miracle of technology and mass e-mailing, these websites have gotten into the inbox of most locals and who from then on believed full-heartedly that there are really short cuts in getting baik.
Some members of the public have also disclosed to the Bulletin that there arc also people willing to share the knowledge and teach them how to make money through these Internet schemes. This knowledge however comes at a certain cost for a certain number of hours of classes.
There is also allegedly some gathering done to recruit more people to join in the scheme.
Information and advice on fraudulent Internet investment schemes are available online and many of the websites provide extensive listings on current fake schemes. This however has not come to the attention of some people who instead 'click' directly onto the fraud website and get interested straight away
ArabianBusiness.com recently reported that the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) has foiled a fraudulent online investment scheme which claims to have offices in Chicago, Zurich and Dubai.
The scheme allegedly has offered returns from 100 percent to 230 percent on 100 investment products.
The 100 days or 3 months might not sound long enough but it provides ample time for the scammers to run away with the victim's money.
The MoF latest warning urges the general public to be vigilant of any investment scheme purporting high rates of return. "Anyone offering financial investment products in Brunei must obtain approval or be licensed by the ministry prior to offering any such financial investment product," the statement also said.
Any person who contravenes or fails to comply is an offence and "liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding B$1 million, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or both under the Securities Order 2001 orto a fine not exceeding B$10 million, imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or both".
For those found continuing in the offence, a further fine of not more than BSI 00,000 for every day during which the offence continues after conviction under the Banking Order 2006.
Online experts in their advice have said that the easiest tell-tale sign to identify these fraud schemes is that most of them do not list any address or contact number on their website.
Most of them only state the country where their offices are based and contact is mostly through e-mail. This will he a problem should the worst happen and the victim cannot contact the so-called company and their e-mails go unanswered.
The psychological effect when seeing your account increasing online may lead to the person putting more money into it.
A 30-year-old man working in the private sector who claimed to have lost his money through such a scheme told the Bulletin that he didn't believe his money was doubling when he saw it from his online account set up by the investment company.
He added more money in thinking that it will grow even more but instead two months later, everything had gone. "My money doubled from the website online account but unfortunately not my bank account."
"Everything was just fake, the account, the website, the company and the promises," said the man who wished only to be known as "Haji".
Asked whether he reported the matter to the authorities, the man s imply said that he was too embarrassed to come forward.

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Fire which broke out midday at a restaurant in Kinlap yesterday saw patrons abandoning their meals.
The blaze had to be hosed down by 25 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, with 16 from the BSB Fire Station involving three fire engines and the Beribi Fire Station dispatching two fire engines and nine personnel. It was led by the commanding officer of Operations A".
Fire and Rescue received a call at 1.11pm and firemen arrived there at 1.16pm and took eight minutes to put out the fire.
According to the manager of the gutted restaurant, Pg Ilj )thman Pg Hj Sabdin, "I was there when it happened. Luckily, there were not that many people at the time. Suddenly I heard an explosion and managed to rush everyone out. Fortunately, no one was injured but we were unable to control the fire as the blaze got bigger, I suspect the cause as due to an explosion from the gas cylinder."
His suspicion was concurred by Pg Roslan Pg Hj Halus Head of Investigations of the Fire and Rescue Department who said "the fire was caused by a leak in the gas cylinder hose. The explosion and blaze also affected restaurants nearby when their customers lied. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Bandar Seri Begawan - Total, one of the world's leading oil and gas companies, yesterday hosted a roundtable "Towards Sustainable Development and Future Energy" at Dewan Muzakarah, International Convention Centre (ICC).
The half-day programme was aimed at creating greater awareness on the importance of alternative sources of energy and today's living in a way that does not compromise the needs of our future generations.
The roundtable conference was held in association with Asia Inc Forum and supported by the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies, French Embassy and Radio Television Brunei.
It brought together a diverse group of figures from the private and public sectors to take part in an interactive dialogue, sharing ideas on how the government and local businesses can work together.
In a welcoming remark from the General Manager of TOTAL E&P Boreneo BV, Mr Louis Heuze, he said at the moment the Brunei branch is revisiting Sustainable Development and is willing to work closely with relevant government authorities to ensure that the programme will be coherent with the government's aspirations.
Present as the guest of honour at the event was Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah bin Hj Abdul Wahab, Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources.
In his keynote address, he posed five questions: What is Sustainable Development and future energy? What is the relationship between these two areas? Why are Sustainable Development and future energy a major concern today? What do we need to do, or rather what is the mechanism that needs to be in place, to meet these Sustainable Development objectives? And lastly, what can we, as individuals, do to contribute collectively?
In an attempt to answer the first question, Dato Hj Hamdillah continued by defining Sustainable Development as a term that was coined at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, and that it is a comprehensive, ambitious objective that requires participation from many stakeholders and discipline.
He stressed that coherent action between individuals and institutions in the public and private sectors is necessary and enables the mobilisation of resources, energy and innovative technologies to address the challenges ahead.
Energy is at the core of the Sustainable Development Agenda, as it plays a key role in achieving the economic, social and environmental objective of Sustainable Development. Having access to, and therefore, adequate availability of energy and services is a prerequisite to achieving the socioeconomic development that is required to improve the quality of life and satisfy basic human needs. The Deputy Minister further stressed that an adequate supply of energy is urgently needed in developing regions, in particular, in the least developed countries, especially in remote rural areas.
It is also a prerequisite for Sustainable Development in the industrialised world and in countries with economies in transition, such as Brunei Darussalam. The supply of energy and services should be secure, reliable and affordable if it were to support businesses and local employment, and create an environment for new industrial activity.
He then touched on the environmental implications 0f the continuous use of fossil fuels, which could be seen from the receding glaciers, the depleting snows of Kilimanjaro, altering global rainfall patterns and the growing drought in China's Yangtze River Basin, which experts are attributing to climate change. In evaluation, we cannot address Sustainable Development without addressing climate change.
As suggested in the United Nations Report at Johannesburg Summit 2002 on Trends in Sustainable Development, the increasing population density, especially in Asia, combined with higher standards of living, particularly in the developing countries, will pose enormous strains on land, water, energy and other natural resources such as forest resources.
As natural resources become scarce, global tensions may inevitably increase.
During the Heart of Borneo Global Issue Conference held in early March, particular emphasis was given to the sustainable economic development opportunities, and it was viewed by His Majesty's Government to be a very important initiative, particularly for the future of the people living on the island of Borneo.
Borneo is extremely rich in timber, minerals and water resources, which according to the Deputy Minister needs to be managed to ensure its economic and environmental sustainability, particularly if this critical water catchments for Borneo is to be maintained.
As of today, he continued, we are embarking on the development of Project Implementation Framework for Brunei Darussalam, a road map which will address targets and outputs, programmes and activities, funding, as well as institutional roles and responsibilities.
Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah believes that as individuals, we can do small things that can make a big difference, referencing in particular to Professor Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner's story of 'Hummingbird'.
Preserving the environment can begin within our own backyard by the planting of trees, adopting the principle of reducing, reusing and recycling waste, using water frugally, driving small economy cars and switching off the car engine while waiting.
The conference then proceeded with a "The Future of Energy" presentation by Mr Jean-Michel Gires, Executive Vice President for Sustainable Development and the Environment of TOTAL, who later led the environmental aspect of an open-forum discussion. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

50 Fined In Speed Trap Operation

Bandar Seri Begawan - A speed trap was held yesterday for over two hours by RBPF's Investigation and Traffic Department in an operation led by Sergeant Hj Simpol and 18 other police personnel.
About 50 drivers were fined $50 each, after they were caught speeding near Istana Nurul Iman in Jalan Tutong, heading towards the Kg Bunut area.
The trap was set up to enforce the highway's speed limit, which is 50km per hour, said Sergeant Hj Simpol, who also urged road users to obey traffic rules and regulations, as well as to exercise caution.
He added that action would be taken immediately on those caught with illegal modifications to their cars, such as lowered springs, tinted glasses, as well as nonregistered paint jobs and sport rims among others. Prince Mateen At Appreciation Dinner

Bandar Seri Begawan - 揑 hope that this form of charitable undertaking will not only provide young people with an enjoyable past-time, but will also instil in them a sense of purpose and responsibility, for the welfare of those who are less able than we are," observed HRH Prince 'Abdul Mateen during an appreciation dinner for the Gunners/Pusu Charity Football Match, last evening.
Following his speech, His Royal Highness presented cheques of $23,273.40 each to Dana Pengiran Muda Mahkota AlMuhtadee Billah Untuk Anak-Anak Yatim and Pusat Ehsan.
The evening programme also included an auctioning of four Nike Yellow/Maroon Nike soccer balls signed by His Royal Highness. All four balls were auctioned off to their new owners at a total of $2,100.
The bidding started at B$300.
The first and second soccer balls went for $500, third at $600, and the last at $1000.

After winning three out of four sporting events, Singapore Police Force emerged as the overall champions for this year's Royal Brunei Police Force and Singapore Police Force Inter-Forces Games.
In the golf event, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) team emerged champions with 192 points while the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) team trailed behind with a total of 184 points. In the soccer event, Singapore Police Force beat Royal Brunei Police Force 4-1.
For the netball event, the SPF ladies netball team defeated their RBPF counterparts narrowly 37-34 to be crowned as winners.
However, RBPF was able to take one sporting event with an impressive win in the badminton event with 5-1 games.
A prize presentation ceremony for the Royal Brunei Police Force and Singapore Police Force Inter-Forces Games took place at the Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong, last night.
The guest of honour at the ceremony was Pehin Datu Kerma Setia CP Dato Paduka Seri Zainuddin bin Jalani, Commissioner of Police, Royal Brunei Police Force.
"We are indeed privileged to host the Inter-Forces Games for the first time in Brunei," Royal Brunei Sports Council chairman S/Supt Matamit bin Hj Kanak said in his welcoming remarks.
"In fact, this is not the first time the games have been organised. It was last year that the Singapore Police Force first organised such a tournament, which was seen as a success by both forces."
"With the theme of 'Forging Ties and Building Bonds', we are aware that sports can be a contributor to building goodwill, peace and harmony, not only among participants, but also among nations," added S/Supt Matamit.
"In the true spirit of sportsmanship, I am sure all of us will take this as an educational and character-building exercise."
He also said that, aside from benefiting the participating teams and players, the Inter-Forces games would also foster the existing relationship between both forces.
"These games will also give the opportunity for our teams to upgrade our individual skills in preparation for bigger events in the future."
The Singapore Police Force will play host to the next Inter-Forces Games to be held in 2008.
