Bidayuh identity will not be lost with resettlement

KUCHING: The Bidayuh community has been assured that the naming of a resettlement area for four villages as Medan Tun Razak will not affect their identity in any way.

State Environment and Public Health Minister Datuk Michael Manyin said the proposed name was meant to attract development funds from the federal and state governments besides honouring Malaysia's second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

"The Bidayuh identity is still intact, our culture and our language will remain (in the resettlement area)," he told a press conference here on Thursday.

He was responding to unhappiness aired by the Bidayuh community on the Internet and through SMS over the proposed name which they felt would take away their identity.

About 200 families from Kampung Sait, Kampung Pain, Kampung Rejoi and Kampung Semban will be relocated to the new area between Kampung Semadang in Padawan and Skio in Bau to make way for the construction of the proposed Bengoh Dam.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had announced on Tuesday that the resettlement area would be named Kampung Tun Razak.

However, Manyin clarified that the area would be called "Medan" instead of "Kampung" in order to accommodate the original names of the four villages after their relocation.

"We will have the four villages in the resettlement area. They will be properly sited, with a buffer zone between each village, and they will retain their names and their own headmen," he said.

He added that churches and cemeteries would be built according to the villages' denominations, while each village would also have a site for a community hall.





jgn cakap aje.. sbb dah banyak dah suku kaum natives kat sabah sarawak - lupa depa punya culture etc.. development is fine.. tapi aku rasa kena jaga gak tentang asal usul kaum tu dan yg penting culture kaum tu intact dan tak dilupakan  ..  comel org bidayuh nih!!

betui bleh katakan kebanyakan org bidayuh ni ramai yg pegang jawatan tinggi kat kerajaan, biz & sebagainye.. menurut citer2 org tua.. kaum bidayuh ni di angkat menjadi kakitangan kerjaan RAjah Putih dulu.. agak2nye la..
