The palace was originally a double-storey mansion built in 1928 by a local Chinese millionaire,Chan Wing. During the Japanese occupation from 1942–1945, it was used as the Japanese officers’ mess. After the surrender of the Japanese, the building was bought by the Selangor State Government. It was then renovated to become the palace of His Majesty the Sultan of Selangor until 1957. The Federal Government then bought the palace in 1957, to be converted into the Istana Negara for the newly created sovereign post of Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaya which was about to achieve independence that August as scheduled. Since then it has undergone several renovations and extensions. But the most extensive upgrading was carried out in 1980, as it was the first time that the Installation Ceremony of His Majesty DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong was held at the Istana Negara. Prior to this the Installation Ceremonies were held at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Hall in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur with the first one held in 1957.

who is Chan Wing?, "from Poor migrant to Millionaire"

It was once the home of a Chinese immigrant who made his money in tin mines and other businesses. Chan Wing built the huge house to accommodate his large family, including his 26 wives, whom he brought to Kuala Lumpur from Hong Kong in the 1920s.
According to the book, From Poor Migrant to Millionaire Chan Wing 1873-1947, written by Chan King Nui, the eighth daughter of Chan Wing, the house (now Istana Negara) was the scene of big celebrations including Chinese New Year.
During World War II, the Chan family fled to India and only returned after the war. Often referred to as “the house on the hill”, Istana Negara was acquired by the British Army for the Royal Airforce (R.A.F.) after the war.
who is Chan Wing?, "from Poor migrant to Millionaire"
Chan King Nui in 2000; now 93, Chan’s book on her father’s rise from coolie
to millionaire
"Father had already purchased 13 acres (five hectares) of land at Taylor Road in Kuala Lumpur.
"He engaged the well-known architects, Swan and McLaren, to design the biggest house in Malaya."
daripada PENDATANG MISKIN kepada JUTAWAN.. anak Chan Wing tulis buku neh..waris mereka yg skrg adlah pemilik The Mines di KL.. sekarang mereka seme da jadik rakyat Australia masa kena serang dengan nipponn dulu |

Chan Wing- the man who built our King's Palace
sos:Chan Wing
Chan Wing- arrived in Malaya in 1887 as a coolie- struck it rich with the opening of the Hong Fatt Tin Mine in Sungai Besi.
He has in total 26 children with 9 wives .
Chan Wing was a staunch believer in the teachings of Confucious and accordingly, the lifestyle of the time was that many Chinese men took a few wives because they wanted sons to carry on the family lineage.
When he first came with his family to KL from HongKong in 1918, they lived in a house on Weld Road, the present Jln Raja Chulan.
Being a busines man, he even ventured into rubber plantations. He was attributed to be one of the founding members of the Kwong Yik Bank in 1913.
A good indication of his wealth and stature would be in 1922, his car was commandeered for use during the visit by the Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VIII of England. Possession of a car was a rare feat during those days.
Weld Road house became too small for his growing family. He purchased a 13acres piece of land and engage well known architecks Swann & McLaren to design "the biggest house in Malaya" then . 1929- he moved into the "Big House" wih his family.
2nd World War- the family fled to Cameron first, then subsequently fled to India where they waited out the war in Mussorie in India, till March 1946.
He later passed away 1947, at the age of 74..........
as narrated by Chan Wing's 8th child- daughter Chan King Nu |
