What’s in a name?

On our return from Hawkes Bay, Ingrid, Rochelle and I decide to stop in the World’s Longest Place Name which is on Route 52. It is the Māori name for a hill, close to Porangahau, south of Waipukurau in southern Hawke’s Bay. It has gained a measure of fame as it is the longest place-name found in any English-speaking country and at 85 letters, it has been listed in the Guinness World Records as one of the longest place names in the world.

It also has the longest sign for a place name; 33ft long just to spell it out. The name is given by the local Maori people, Ngati Kere to the hill to celebrate the eponymous ancestor Tamatea Pokai Whenua.
