Teams include old hands in chase for Thomas Cup crown
By RAJES PAUL
PETALING JAYA: The old-timers may turn out to be the winners for the top contenders in the Thomas Cup Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.
In the official list of teams released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) yesterday, South Korea pulled off a surprise by naming former international Lee Hyun-il in their line-up and left out their young doubles superstar Lee Yong-dae.
They were the last team to submit their entries but they were certainly not the only team to bring back their old stars.
Denmark have asked Kenneth Jonassen to fulfil one mission for them – to help win the elusive title before he heads for England to be a coach in July.
Malaysia have seasoned campaigner Wong Choong Hann to play in a seventh Finals. Indonesia are hoping that mixed doubles specialist Nova Widianto will strengthen their line-up. And Japan are banking on former international Shoji Sato to play the third singles.
Malaysia’s singles coach Misbun Sidek (pic) said that he was not surprised over the teams recalling their former players for the campaign.
“We thought that we were the only team to rely on former players. But it appears as though the others are in the same boat,” he said.
“It shows that many teams are facing the same situation as us. They just do not have new faces coming to the fore. Even if they have done so, they do not have enough experience to be considered for this premier team event.”
Misbun added that all the teams believed they still have a shot at winning this time.
“By roping in former players to play at either the second or third singles or in the doubles, they showed that there is a chance for everyone this time,” he said.
“Everyone is hoping for an element of surprise by fielding the unexpected players. The psychological war has already begun. It looks like all team are hoping for their aging stars to create fear in their rivals.
“China, however, will still be the favourites but they are not invincible. I certainly foresee some exciting times ahead.”
The absence of Yong-dae may have diluted the strength of the Koreans but his older partner, Jung Jae-sung is set to be a secret weapon. He could partner any player and still form a lethal combination.
In the Uber Cup Finals, China are the heavy favourites. They have fielded all their best and upcoming players and it will be impossible for others to deny them the Cup.
For the record, only three teams have won the Thomas Cup – China (seven times), Indonesia (13) and Malaysia (5). In the Uber Cup, the spoils are shared among five countries – China (11 times), Japan (5), Indonesia (3) and the United States (3). |
