Shuttlers list out reasons for poor performance in the Finals
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: The Thomas-Uber Cup players have blamed the failure to host centralised training in isolation as one of the many reasons for their poor performances.
These issues were brought up during a no-holds barred meeting with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh yesterday.
Other grievances and excuses brought up by the shuttlers were that:
·They were, culturally, not as mentally strong as the shuttlers from China and South Korea;
·there was too much disturbance from the media and their surroundings (at the hostel where they shared the facilities with athletes from other sports at Bukit Kiara);
·the motivation camp was held too close to the Finals;
·they lost to Japan (2-3 in the group tie) because they did not get a chance to try out the stadium when Nigeria failed to turn up for their opening match.
Nadzmi said he was surprised to hear their reasons for their tame performances when it mattered most.
The Thomas Cup squad, led by world No. 1s Lee Chong Wei and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, went down 0-3 to China in the semi-finals while the Uber Cup team, led by Wong Mew Choo and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, went down by a similar score to Indonesia in the quarter-finals. “The objective of this meeting was for the players to speak to me in a relaxed and open manner. They were free to say what they felt about their performances in the Finals,” said Nadzmi.
“Chong Wei understood what happened to him (in his match against Lin Dan). He says that his condition was equal to Lin Dan's but that the China ace was better prepared. Chong Wei is also aware that there are no back-up players coming through.
“All of them could analyse what had happened. I do not want to go into details. Every individual had his or her own set of problems.
“Generally, they said that China and South Korea had players who were mentally strong because of their culture.”
Nadzmi said that the players felt that a two-week training in isolation would have done them a world of good before the Finals.
“It would have kept them away from their families and the press. They felt that there were too much distraction. In China and South Korea, the players trained in isolation before the Finals. In fact, coaches and players only get to see their families once every two weeks,” he said.
“Sometimes, negative reports can be a distraction. In a competition, the best team do not necessarily win. There are a lot of external and multi-faceted factors that need to be looked into.”
When told that the players should have analysed their own shortcomings instead of highlighting external factors, Nadzmi said: “Yes, they also blamed themselves. They need help and it is our duty to manage and find the best way to overcome this problem.
“We are not jumping to any conclusions here. I am also not saying what the players said here today is right or wrong.
“We are not blaming anyone but we are looking for solutions. There could be other factors, like the players' lifestyles or commitment in training. We will come out with a conclusion when we have had our post-mortem.”
Nadzmi will meet with the national coaches today.
* takde plak mention psl one-day-break pas dorang menang QF.. yg ni lg la tak patut.. baru menang QF je bknnya menang final pun |

Coaches get the blame for Julia, Lydia fiasco
KUALA LUMPUR: The coaches have been singled out as the guilty party in the fiasco that led to two players - Julia Wong and Lydia Cheah - not being able to play in the Uber Cup tournament.
Yesterday, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh said that it was the duty of the coaches to keep an eye on their players.
Singles shuttlers Julia and Lydia were dropped after a three-day motivation camp at Port Dickson when they aggravated their injuries less than two weeks before the Finals.
The duo were replaced by Sannatasah Saniru and Sonia Cheah.
There was an infection on Julia's knee while Lydia hurt her back after taking part in a banana boat fun activity with others during free time.
“In China and South Korea, the players will not do anything without their coaches' approval. The coaches are closest to them and they should have looked into this,” Nadzmi said.
When asked why Julia's name was included in the Uber Cup team although she had not been training due to her knee problems, BAM general manager Kenny Goh said: “She was named in the team with the approval from the coaches and the NSI (National Sports Institute) ... but we had to drop her because her knee became infected during the camp.”

Nadzmi: We're looking at long-term solutions
KUALA LUMPUR: “Do not expect immediate results.”
Those were the words of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh after he had held a heart-to-heart talk with the Thomas-Uber Cup players at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara yesterday.
“Yes, we want to find solutions to the lack of depth in our team now. We are talking to all parties involved and we will also look at how others (China and South) are doing. These findings will help us come up with a long-term plan,” he said.
“But we do not plan to make any changes to our short-term plan. We have a few more major tournaments lined up for this year and it is not logical to make any drastic changes now. There are no plans to drop either the coaches or the players.
“We will fine-tune whatever we can. It is better that we do not expect any immediate results.”
One of the things BAM will do is to minimise the number of tournaments world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei competes in.
“Lin Dan only plays in selected tournaments and shines at major events. Maybe, this is one aspect that we may want Chong Wei to consider,” he said.
The remaining major tournaments this year are the World Championships in Paris (August), Commonwealth Games in India (October) and the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China (November). |

Winnie K serves up a new song
PETALING JAYA: Her love for badminton is so great that Winnie K has written and included one song in her new Mandarin mini album especially for the popular game.
“I love badminton. I've penned one song, Jia You (Go for it), which is also the theme song for Kuala Lumpur Racquet Club (KLRC),” the singer said yesterday.
The song, she added, also represented her support for the game, especially for the Malaysian team.
Winnie also managed to watch the team slug it out in the recent Thomas Cup, adding that she used to represent her school in badminton tournaments.
Winnie also revealed that she used to date Indonesian national champion, Taufik Hidayat, while national doubles shuttler Koo Kien Keat is a close friend of hers.
“Things are long over between Taufik and me, but we remain good friends,” Winnie said.
“That's why you will always see me cheering him on.”
The singer maintains that she had a strictly platonic relationship with Koo whom she met through Taufik.
“We're not dating as rumoured,” Winnie reiterated.
“A girl-guy relationship doesn't have to be romance, you know. It is possible for us to be just good friends and nothing else.”
