Yamaha to display new livery at Sepang test

The Champion Fiat Yamaha team has confirmed that it will reveal its 2010 livery on the morning of the first pre-season test session in Malaysia. Riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo will then test at Sepang with the new design in place.
With testing due to kick off on Thursday 4 February, Yamaha will unveil its livery at 10am local time, with studio shoot photographs of both riders and the YZR-M1 bikes then being available on the team's website.

Champion Rossi is currently in Spain, with his 2-day Formula 1 test session at the wheel of a 2008 Ferrari due to come to a close on Thursday evening.

Malaysia signs new 5-year deal

MotoGP will remain in Malaysia until at least 2015 following the confirmation of a fresh deal between the Sepang circuit and championship commercial rights holder Dorna Sports. The contract confirms that the sport will stay in the South-east Asian country, which it first visited almost two decades ago.
With Shah Alam having been the first Malaysian Grand Prix venue back in 1991, when America's John Kocinski took the honours for Yamaha, Johor hosted a single event in 1998 before a brand-new Sepang made its first appearance in 1999, remaining on the schedule ever since.

The latest pact sees Malaysia stay on the calendar at the circuit alongside Kuala Lumpur's International Airport until at least the 2015 season. "If we agree to the deal with Dorna, it comes with the understanding that we will have a Malaysian rider competing until 2015," Razlan Razali, Chief Executive Officer of Sepang International Circuit (SIC), explained to Malaysia's The Star newspaper.

"The aim is to develop young talent to participate in future World Championships; after all, what is the point of having a Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix with no promising local talent coming up?"

Rossi and Lorenzo stop sharing data

"I don't have anything to comment on this" - Jorge Lorenzo.

Fiat Yamaha team-mates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, whose pit garages are already separated by a wall, will no longer directly share data during a grand prix weekend.

The change first came to light during a press release Q&A with Rossi's team manager Davide Brivio, released by Yamaha on Thursday to coincide with the official Fiat Yamaha team launch during the Sepang test.

“In 2010 we will have small changes [in terms of information sharing between Rossi and Lorenzo], compared to 2009,” Brivio said.

“In consideration of the fact that the two riders are the main rivals for the championship, we have decided to respect this competition internally and to respect their own ways to race and to approach the competition, so during the weekend the two teams will be much more independent and the challenge will be closer.

“Not much information can be exchanged between the two teams.

“At YMC level, back at the office, the engineers can compare the data and the information, but the two teams inside the garage can work more independently from a technical point of view.”

Later on Thursday evening, during a Yamaha press conference, Crash.net asked Fiat Yamaha team director Masahiko Nakajima - who oversees both sides of the factory Yamaha garage - about the change.

“Yes,” Nakajima replied. “So each team [Rossi and Lorenzo] has their own data. You can't see the other team's data. Only Yamaha engineers can see all the data and then feed it back to both riders.”

Rossi and Lorenzo, first and second in the 2009 world championship, then took to the stage and were asked about the increased secrecy - and who had suggested it.

“I think that Jorge - already in 2008 but especially last year - demonstrated great speed and also a good attitude to fix and set-up the bike,” replied Rossi. “Now Jorge has two years in MotoGP so everybody in the team are agreed that it is possible to make his own way.

Ben Spies 'fast from first race', podium potential

“2010 will be his rookie year, but that does not mean Ben should give up on getting strong results”
Monster Yamaha Tech 3 boss Herve Poncharal believes Ben Spies has what it takes to break into the MotoGP big four - and tips the Texan to be a podium threat during a 'strong' 2010 rookie season in grand prix.

Overlooked after three rides with Suzuki in 2008, Spies jolted the premier-class paddock into action by winning Yamaha's first World Superbike Championship - at his very first attempt - in 2009.

Unsurprisingly, Yamaha moved quickly to retain Spies, the factory's sense of urgency illustrated by the initial announcement of a new two-year contract - without stating exactly which championship the 25-year-old would race in!

It was claimed that another year in WSBK was 'foreseen' before joining MotoGP, but the second Tech 3 seat alongside Colin Edwards remained open and few were surprised when it was confirmed that Spies would replace James Toseland for 2010.

Spies instantly repaid Yamaha's faith with seventh on his M1 debut as a wild-card at the Valencia finale, before setting the fourth fastest lap time during his Tech 3 debut at the post-race test.

Whilst admitting that praising Spies is an easy task, Poncharal also explained why he has high expectations for the triple AMA Superbike champion during 2010.

“I am going to push an open door when I tell you that Ben is an incredible rider, an incredible talent and that he will be a very, very strong MotoGP rider,” Poncharal told Crash.net. “There is nothing new in me saying that. It has been said and written by many people before.

“But what I can also tell you is that I very much like his approach.

“Although Ben has a very big pedigree, he has a very humble attitude. He is listening to what people are saying. He wants to understand what needs to be done to go faster and, maybe most importantly of all, he doesn't want to adapt the bike to his riding style.

“Ben understands that a MotoGP bike is different to anything else he has ridden. It has very specific characteristics in terms of the chassis, engine and tyres. You have to ride this package in a MotoGP way.

Honda: No data sharing since 2008!

Following the news that Yamaha team-mates and title rivals Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo will no longer share data during a grand prix weekend, Honda has revealed that its factory riders haven't been exchanging information since 2008.

Kazuhiko Yamano (pictured), formerly Repsol Honda team manager and now team director, revealed the existence of the policy during a Friday morning press meeting here at Sepang in Malaysia, venue for this week's MotoGP test.

“This year there are some small changes to the Repsol Honda team structure. I am now the team director and both Dani and Dovi have their own separate team managers, like at Yamaha,” began Yamano.

The mention of Yamaha prompted the question of how much data will be shared between the Repsol riders.

“So, at Repsol Honda, since 2008, data has been separate in the pit garage,” Yamano revealed. “But development side the data is still shared. Yamaha is starting [to do this] this year [but] we started in 2008.”

Pedrosa was still riding alongside Nicky Hayden at Repsol Honda during the 2008 season. Dovizioso then replaced the American for 2009.

Despite the technical 'firewall' between the Repsol riders, Yamano insisted that communication is not a problem.

“Outside it might look like a wall [divides the team], but inside Dani and Dovi and me discuss things all together.

“And this year there will be more discussions like that between us. It will be more open.

“I'll take photos so everyone can see!” he joked.
