Swimming: Disappointed despite meet record
By : ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL
She did it while adding another record to her growing list of honours in the National Age Group Championships in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
THE queen of last year抯 Malaysia Games, swimmer Lew Yih Wey (above), has booked her ticket to this year抯 Korat Sea Games.
Although the 15-year-old bettered national swimmer Khoo Cai Lin抯 800m freestyle meet record yesterday by a whopping 11 seconds with a time of nine minutes 0.51 seconds, she was disappointed that she failed to meet her coach抯 target.
"My coach (Tian Kuihua) had told me to dip below nine minutes, but I had failed," she said. "I clocked my personal best and I抳e qualified for the Sea Games, but I still have to meet that target," added the Port Dickson High School student.
Yih Wey, who won nine gold medals to be crowned the Best Female Athlete of the Malaysia Games in Kedah last year, said she will be out to break the nine-minute barrier in the Malaysian Open in Shah Alam in August.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Cai Lin has yet to beat Ong Ming Xiu抯 silver medal mark of 9:02.20s set in the Manila Sea Games two years ago to qualify for the Sea Games.
Cai Lin was the front-runner to join Melbourne-based Ming Xiu in the event in the Korat Sea Games, but now it looks like Yih Wey has beaten her to it. Cai Lin did not compete yesterday,
Last year, Yih Wey opted out of the national programme to remain under Kuihua in the Negri Sembilan Amateur Swimming Association programme in Seremban.
Yih Wey yesterday also won the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:24.24s, but in the 100m freestyle, she was upstaged by Sabah抯 Leung Chii Lin.
Chii Lin set a meet record of 59.17s, but was still over a second adrift off the Sea Games qualifying mark of 57.74s. Chii Lin and Marellyn Liew, two of Sabah抯 elite swimmers now under their new coach Lim Keng Liat, look set to give Yih Wey a fight over the next two days of the championships.
Marellyn swam away with the 100m butterfly gold almost five seconds faster than Chii Lin after it looked set to be a two-horse race in the early stages. Yih Wey, however, holds the edge over the two challengers from Sabah, having added the 200m breaststroke gold to the 800m freestyle. |

unless ko mmg training bagai nk mati.. itu konpem..
dulu waktu ako kena ragging training.. bagai nk mati tu.. berat badan turun n slim sket.. skang dah malas dah nk jadi spare tyre laks.. hahaaha
jom kite training sesama.. mau?
for sure.. kalu u swim bebetul.. bila kuar dari pool akan rasa panas n berpeluh bila dah pakai baju.. itu nama nyer bersenam..
swimming gud for everybody sebb guna satu badan compared to aktiviti lain.. maa..
