31 dead as TransAsia plane clips Taiwan bridge and crashes

TAIPEI — A TransAsia Airways plane with 58 passengers and crew on board careened into a river shortly after taking off from a downtown Taipei airport yesterday, killing 31 people and leaving 11 missing, officials said.

Sixteen people survived the crash after the plane lurched between buildings, clipped a taxi and an overpass with its port-side wing and crashed upside down in the shallow water.

Dramatic pictures taken by a motorist and posted on Twitter showed the plane careening over the motorway soon after the turboprop ATR 72-600 aircraft took off in apparently clear weather on a domestic flight for the island of Kinmen.

“I’ve never seen anything like this,” a volunteer rescuer surnamed Chen said of the most recent in a series of disasters to hit Asian carriers in the past 12 months.

Television footage showed survivors wearing life jackets wading and swimming clear of the wreckage. Others, including a young child, were taken to shore in inflatable boats.

Emergency rescue officials crowded around the partially submerged fuselage of Flight GE235, lying on its side in the river, trying to help those on board.

They used a crane to hoist the wreckage from the river as rescue efforts stretched into the night.

The plane missed apartment buildings by metres, though it was not clear if that was luck or whether the pilot was aiming for the river. Footage showed a van skidding to a halt on the damaged overpass after barely missing the plane’s wing, with small pieces of the aircraft scattered along the road.

TransAsia chief executive Peter Chen bowed deeply at a televised news conference as he apologised to the passengers and crew, while Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said his government had offered Taiwan any help necessary.

The last communication from one of the aircraft’s pilots was “Mayday, Mayday, engine flameout”, an air traffic control recording on liveatc.net showed.

A flameout occurs when the fuel supply to the engine is interrupted or when there is faulty combustion, resulting in an engine failure. Twin-engined aircraft, however, are usually able to keep flying even when one engine has failed.

Taiwan’s civil aviation authority head Lin Tyh-ming said the aircraft last underwent maintenance on Jan 26. The pilot had 4,916 hours of flying hours under his belt and the co-pilot had 6,922 hours, he said.

A statement from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said 31 of those on board were tourists from the south-eastern city of Xiamen, which lies close to Taiwan’s Kinmen island.

The crash is the latest in a string of mishaps to hit Asian carriers in the past 12 months. An AirAsia jet bound for Singapore crashed soon after taking off from the Indonesian city of Surabaya on Dec 28, killing all 162 people on board.

Also last year, a Malaysia Airlines jet disappeared and one of its sister planes was downed over Ukraine, with a combined loss of 537 lives.

TransAsia is Taiwan’s third-largest carrier. One of its ATR 72-500 planes crashed while trying to land at Penghu Island last July, killing 48 of the 58 passengers and crew on board.

Taiwan has had a poor aviation safety record in recent years, including the disintegration of a China Airlines 747 during a flight from Taipei to Hong Kong in 2002, which killed 225.

In 2000, a Singapore Airlines jetliner taking off from Taipei for Los Angeles during a storm hit construction equipment on the runway, killing dozens. AGENCIES

BEIJING — A pilot of the TransAsia Airways Flight 235 said "mayday, mayday, engine flameout" moments before the propjet banked sharply and crashed into a river, Taiwan aviation officials said Thursday as the death toll grew to 31 with 12 people still missing.

Rescue teams resumed the search for the missing, who include the two pilots.

The twin-engine propjet had 58 people aboard, many of them travelers from China, when it banked sharply on its side Wednesday, clipped a highway bridge and careened into the Keelung River. Rescuers in rubber rafts pulled 15 people alive from the wreckage during daylight.

Video images of the plane's final moments in the air captured on car dashboard cameras do not appear to show flames as it turned sharply, with its wings going vertical and clipping a highway bridge before plunging into the Keelung River Wednesday,

Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration said 31 people were confirmed dead, 15 were rescued with injuries and 12 were still missing. It said two people on the ground were hurt. The agency released a bits of audio recordings including the pilot's mayday call.

Taiwanese rescuers used a massive crane to hoist the French-built ATR 72-600 plane from the shallow, murky river after survivors were brought to safety on rubber rafts or scrambled to the river bank on their own. One injured person was reportedly found in a park along the river, Taiwan News reported.

Wu Jun-Hong, a Taipei Fire Department official coordinating the rescue, said he was not "too optimistic" that more survivors would be found.

Dramatic dashcam footage from vehicles on an elevated highway clearly shows the plane's tragic crash. Some Taiwanese paid homage to the pilot, saying he made a desperate, deliberate choice to avoid the additional casualties likely if the plane had hit nearby apartment buildings, high schools and roads.

Taiwan's Liberty Times newspaper quoted online comments thanking and praising the pilot's actions, although aviation authorities could not immediately confirm such an effort took place. The fate of pilot Liao Jianzong, who reportedly had nearly 5,000 hours of flying experience, was not immediately known.
