Tan: It’s good to be home

PETALING JAYA: There is nothing like home for former international Tan Kim Her.
Last night, he returned to Malaysia to celebrate Chinese New Year with his family for the first time since leaving the country five years ago.
He first coached in South Korea before moving to England.
Home again: Tan Kim Her with his wife, former national bowler Sharon Low and children Brandon and Bernice.
Kim Her said he was glad to return to Malaysia and do his bit to raise the standard of the game here.
He will start work with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) after the Chinese New Year holidays and doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky wants the experienced Kim Her to take charge of the national back-up squad.
Kim Her said he could not wait to get down to work.
“My experience in South Korea and England is priceless. My heart, however, has always been with Malaysia.
“Nothing gives me joy but to be back where I belong,” said Kim Her.
“I am really looking forward to doing my part to raise the standard of badminton here – especially this year when the shuttlers will be facing a challenging time in several major tournaments.”
The major events include the Thomas Cup Finals, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.
Being a strong believer of team work, Kim Her said he was looking forward to working together with Rexy and the other coaches.
He hoped that his presence would support, not break, the coaching team.
“Rexy asked me at last year’s All-England whether I was interested to return home. I said yes and he told me that he would speak with BAM,” said Kim Her.
“Ganga (Rao, the BAM secretary) then approached me during the Hong Kong Open last November. The Korean BA also wanted me (following the resignation of Ha Tae-kwon and Lee Dong-soo as coaches).
“I chose to come back home as it seemed to be the right thing to do. I am thankful to them for giving me this opportunity to serve again.
“I am here to complement the coaching set-up. It will be great to work with Rexy. Malaysian doubles players have won the
Asian Games gold and the All-England title under his charge. I want to learn from him too.
“I will let Rexy and the BAM decide how best I can fit into their plans. I am ready to assume any role.”
The salary package from BAM may not be as lucrative as the one he enjoyed in England but it doesn’t bother Kim Her.
“I will have to take a pay cut but what they (the BAM) are offering me will still allow me to have a comfortable life here. I love badminton and I am here to give back something to the country and, I think, that is more important,” he said.
Kim Her said he had learnt a lot after working in South Korea for 2½ years from 2005 and in England for about the same period from 2007.
“I had different experiences in these two countries,” said Kim Her.
“In South Korea, discipline is crucial. The players show great attitude and commitment in training. I can push them in training and they’ll never complain.
“In England, priority is given to a systematic way of training and coaching.
“They are so organised and professional in their approach. And they bank a lot on sports science. I can transfer the knowledge I have. The most important thing is to have a good relationship with the players.
“I have to earn their respect. I will also do my best to support them all the way.”
Kim Her’s input will certainly add more depth to the men’s doubles department.
