SIMULATION MATCHES TO PREPARE PLAYERS
KUALA LUMPUR (APRIL 21, 2010): The national trainees preparing for the PROTON-BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals KL 2010 will meet the back-up squads later this month in simulation matches.
Former national chief coach Misbun Sidek said the idea to have simulation matches is not new and getting the Thomas and Uber Cuppers to face off against their understudies is a good training exercise.
“The matches will be opened to the public to make it feel just like a Thomas or Uber Cup tie. There will be five matches, - three singles and two doubles – and we hope the fans will come and make lots of noise,” he said.
“I don’t think BAM have decided where to hold the matches. Personally, I prefer Stadium Negara as it holds many happy memories for badminton. However, we must take into consideration the large crowd and whether it has ample parking.
“Wherever it is, I’m sure, the badminton fans will turn up as the competition is very dear to the public.”
As to who will be selected to carry the nation’s challenge in both cup competitions, Misbun said: “All the coaches have had their say on whom they wish to select and now it is up to the top brass to make the final decision.
“As always, there is a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C and it up to the management to decide which one they think is best suited for our challenge.
“All I can say is that the players are ready and after our motivational camp this weekend, we should be on the right track to face our opponents in both competitions.”
The PROTON-BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals KL 2010 will be held at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

Nadzmi puts interests of Thomas-Uber Cup players first
By RAJES PAUL
SEPANG: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh looked tired and pale when he was wheeled out from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here yesterday morning.
But he certainly lit up when he stated his intention to put the Malaysian badminton fraternity back on the right track ahead of the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.
There had been uncertainties, internal bickering and many unwarranted speculations following Nadzmi’s decision to sack P. Ganga Rao as the BAM secretary just a month before the Finals.
Nadzmi had the prerogative to terminate the services of those he had appointed but the timing of his decision was questioned as some felt that it could be a distraction for the players and coaches gearing up for the men’s and women’s world team championships.
Nadzmi spoke yesterday for the first time after sending a press statement on the sacking of Ganga and he immediately cleared the air on several matters.
First, he announced the appointment of general manager Kenny Goh as the secretary until the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals.
“For now, I am not looking for a new secretary because the interests of the teams gearing up for the Finals comes first. Our general manager will take up that role for the time being,” said Nadzmi after arriving from Germany.
He also confirmed that Proton would once again be the main sponsors for the national teams at the Finals after losing that status for about two months.
Prior to the All-England in March, the BAM executive committee, chaired by Nadzmi, announced that Proton would be the association’s title sponsors while ING Insurance would take over as the new sponsor for the national junior and senior teams.
He said yesterday that ING Insurance were no longer sponsors for the BAM but there was a possibility for the national body to re-visit an opportunity to co-partner with the company after the Finals.
“Proton are back as sponsors of the national team,” he said.
“We have resolved the matter with ING Insurance. The problem is not with them (ING). Why do we have to go through an agent for a sponsorship deal? Why was there no direct access?”
Nadzmi, who is the Proton Holdings Bhd chairman, however, stood by his decision to terminate the services of the long-serving Ganga.
His relationship with Ganga soured following the latter’s decision to go through Enterprise Sports Group (ESG) to land a lucrative deal with ING for the national team.
“For now, I do not want to divulge the reasons behind the sacking. As president, I know slightly more than others and I had to terminate his contract because of unfolding events. I take full responsibility for the decision,” he said.
Nadzmi gave an assurance that there would no longer be any distraction for the teams ahead of the Finals.
“The BAM would like to join hands with Proton to give more publicity to the Finals. I am happy to note that almost all the semi-final and final tickets had been sold. The preparation of the teams is also going on smoothly,” he said.
Nadzmi postponed a plan to host a dinner for the players yesterday as he did not want to disrupt the players’ three-day motivation camp, which will begin today in Port Dickson.
On his health, Nadzmi said: “I am better but I need a few days to recover. It is going to be a busy week for me as I will leave the country again on Saturday.”
Nadzmi is one of three Malaysian entrepreneurs appointed to attend the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship hosted by US President Barack Obama next week. |

Chun Seang set to grab reserve spot in Thomas Cup
PETALING JAYA: National back-up squad shuttler Tan Chun Seang will be thanking his lucky stars for making a comeback after walking out of the national team last year.
The 23-year-old Chun Seang is expected to be chosen today ahead of Kuan Beng Hong as the reserve singles player of the Malaysian team for the Thomas Cup Finals.
The top three singles players in the team are world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, veteran Wong Choong Hann and Mohd Hafiz Hashim.
Chun Seang has turned over a new leaf since rejoining the national team in November last year after staying out for two months because of his unhappiness over lack of opportunities to compete abroad.
He is more committed in training and is currently seen as a player who has a stronger character to go against higher ranked players without showing any sign of fear.
He has also benefitted from sparring with Chong Wei and did well to beat third ranked Korean players in the qualfying tournament of the Korean Open in January. He went on and gave a good fight against Chen Jin of China in the first game before losing in the opening round.
The presence of an experienced Choong Hann is also expected to give the team the edge at second singles. He will be making his seventh appearance in the Finals.
For the doubles, Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How are expected to join Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif in the team.
Their inclusion will have much to do with a fiery performance that gave them victory over Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung in the Malaysian Open in January. Meanwhile, strong performances in the recent Asian Badminton championships (ABC) in New Delhi are likely to land Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Goh Liu Ying places in the Uber Cup squad.
Khe Wei-Vivian reached the final of the women’s doubles last Sunday while Liu Ying did well with Chan Peng Soon to win the country’s first mixed doubles title in a top-flight tournament.
The others in the women’s squad are expected to be regular faces – Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Wong Mew Choo, Lydia Cheah, Julia Wong and Tee Jing Yi. |
