Pei Jing’s misfortune costs Malaysia place in the final
PETALING JAYA: A sick Lai Pei Jing had to skip the semi-final tie against South Korea after she was rushed to the hospital in Guadajalara, Mexico.
And in her absence, a weakened Malaysian team went down 2-3 to South Korea in the semi-finals of the mixed team event in the World Junior Championships on Sunday.
With the defeat, Malaysia failed to reach the final for the second consecutive time in the world junior meet.
It is the second time that misfortune had struck Pei Jing.
She had to concede a walkover in the mixed doubles final with Yao Han at the Asian Junior meet last month due to ankle injury.
On Sunday, Malaysia had expected Pei Jing to win the first point for Malaysia with Ow Yao Han in the mixed doubles but the coaches had to change the line-up after she fell sick. Debutants Teo Ee Yi-Yang Li Lian were named for the mixed doubles but they failed to shine after going down tamely 14-21, 9-21 to Kang Ji-wook-Choi Hye-in.
Sonia Cheah failed to put Malaysia back in the fight when she lost 17-21, 17-21 to Park Ko-woon.
The boys’ shuttlers – Zulfadli Zulkifli and Yao Han-Yew Hong Kheng - however, kept Malaysia’s challenge alive when they won their respective matches to haul Malaysia back into contention at 2-2. Zulfadli trounced Ha Young-woung 21-11, 21-15 while Yao Han-Hong Kheng made up for the disappointment at the Asian Junior meet by beating Ji-wook-Choi Seung-il 21-14, 20-22, 21-16.
The Malaysians had lost to the Koreans in the final of the boys’ doubles at the Asian Junior meet last month.
But it was all in vain as the girls’ doubles pair of Sonia-Li Lian went down tamely at 10-21, 4-21 to Choy Hye-in-Lee So-hee in the decider.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) junior programme coordinator Hau Kim Tho said that the absence of Pei Jing made a huge difference to the team.
“She had felt nauseous after the quarter-final tie against Denmark (on Saturday). She was taken to the hospital and admitted for low blood pressure and hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). She had to be under observation for a day before she was sent back to the hotel,” said Kim Tho.
“She could not play against South Korea. The outcome could have been different if Pei Jing had played.”
The individual competition will start today and Malaysia are strong contenders in the boys’ singles and doubles events.
Last year, Malaysia’s Yao Han-Chooi Kah Ming won the boys’ doubles title. |

Hafiz gives Hendrawan a scare
By LIM TEIK HUAT
Harrowing moment
KUALA LUMPUR: Shuttler Mohd Hafiz Hashim gave his coach Hendrawan a scare when he complained of pain on his back after returning from the Asian Champion-ships in New Delhi last week.
But to Hendrawan’s relief, it turned out to be just a sore back.
With no major injury issues to worry about and a place in the World Championships in Paris in August already in Hafiz’s bag, Hendrawan is now looking at his charge to made a vital contribution to Malaysia’s campaign in the Thomas Cup Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil next month.
Hafiz, who is ranked 23rd in the world, will feature as the third singles player in the Malaysian team behind world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei and No. 15 Wong Choong Hann.
“Hafiz started training on Monday and it was just a stiff back after he went to seek treatment,” said Hendrawan.
“It’s not a major problem as I think he got it after playing a series of tough matches at the Asian Championships. I will be worried at this point if any of the players come down with injuries. But thankfully, he is all right.”
The Indonesian, who has been in charge of Hafiz for almost a year, was happy with the player’s performance at the Asian meet.
Hafiz failed in his bid to set up a showdown against Olympic and world champion Lin Dan of China when he lost to Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand in the quarter-finals.
But Hendrawan is satisfied with the performance of Hafiz and felt he has justified his position for a place in the squad for the Thomas Cup Finals.
“I was not there in New Delhi but he showed that his physical condition was up to the mark if you take the fact that he was involved in rubber games from the first round,” he said.
“Hafiz has improved on his physical play and he has reached the target to qualify for the world championships (in Paris in August) after missing out last year. My focus now is to get him ready for the Thomas Cup challenge.”
Hendrawan has trimmed the recommended choices to secure the final singles slot to two players.
They are Kuan Beng Hong and Tan Chun Seang and the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) coaching committee will have to make the decision before the final deadline of entries on Friday. |
