Folklores and legends of mermaids/merfolk
The earliest representations and descriptions of these now well known creatures can be traced back as far as the eighth century BC.
THE BABYLONIANS were known to worship a sea-god called Oannes, or Ea. Oannes was reputed to have risen from the Erythrean Sea and taught to man the arts and sciences. In the Louvre today can be seen an eighth century wall-scene depicting Oannes as a merman, with the fish-like tail and the upperbody of a man.
THE SYRIANS AND THE PHILISTINES were also known to have worshipped a Semitic mermaid moon-goddess. The Syrians called her Atargatis while the Philistines knew her as Derceto. It is not unusual or surprising that this moon-goddess was depicted as a mermaid as the tides ebbed and flowed with the moon then as it does now and this was incorporated into the god-like personifications that we find in their art and the ancient literature. Atargatis is one of the first recorded mermaids and the legend says that her child Semiramis was a normal human and because of this Atargatis was ashamed and killed her lover. Abandoning the infant she became wholly a fish.
THE INDIANS, amongst their many gods, worshipped one group of water-gods known as the Asparas, who were celestial flute-playing water-nymphs.
IN JAPANESE AND CHINESE legends there were not only mermaids but also sea-dragons and the dragon-wives. The Japanese mermaid known as Ningyo was depicted as a fish with only a human head; where as the POLYNESIAN mythology includes a creator named Vatea who was depicted as half-human form and half-porpoise.
GREEK AND ROMAN MYTHOLOGY is often placed together as the two are very similar and it is in the literature from these cultures that one finds the first literary description of the mermaid, and indeed the mermen. Homer mentions the Sirens during the voyage of Odysseus but he fails to give a physical description. The image seen here shows an old black and white film of Homer's tale depicting the sirens in mermaid form. Ovid on the other hand writes that the mermaids were born from the burning galleys of the Trojans where the timbers turned into flesh and blood and the 'green daughters of the sea'.
THE BRITISH ISLES too had their fair share of merfolk mythology. The Cornish knew mermaids as Merrymaids; the Irish knew them as Merrows or Muirruhgach and some sources write that they lived on dry land below the sea and had enchanted caps that allowed them to pass through the water without drowning, while the women were very beautiful the men had red noses, were piggy eyed, with green hair and teeth and a penchant for brandy |

THE GERMAN MYTHOLOGIES OF mermaids are plenty. There are the Meerfrau; the Nix and the Nixe who were the male and female fresh-water inhabitants and it was believed that they were treacherous to men. The nixe lured men to drown while the nix could be in the form of an old dwarfish character or as a golden-haired boy and in Iceland and Sweden could take the form of a centaur.
The nix also loved music and could lure people to him with his harp, if he was in the form of a horse he would tempt people to mount him and then dash into the sea to drown them. While he sometimes desired a human soul he would often demand annual human sacrifices.
There was also a more elvin kind of Nixies that would sometimes appear in the market, she could be identified by the corner of her apron being wet. If they paid a good price it would be an expensive year but if they paid a low price the prices for that year would remain cheap. In the Rhine were to be found the Lorelei from which the town took its name. The Germans also knew the Melusine as a double-tailed mermaid as did the British heraldry as well.
RUSSIAN MERMAID MYTHOLOGY includes the daughters of the Water-King who live beneath the sea; the water-nymph that drowns swimmers known as the Rusalka and the male water-spirit known as the Vodyany who followed sailors and fishermen.
THE BESTIARIES OF the early middle ages included the siren and not the mermaid. As the two creatures became confused in popular beliefs and cultures so too did the bestiary writers confuse the two, as can be seen in this illustration of the siren, complete with a mermaids tail. Mermaids were well known in the bestiaries of Physiologus and his predecessors, where they compiled the zoological information of 'real' animals. Mermaid were believed to exist even by the most educated men.
IN 1403 A MERMAID was apparently found stranded in the mud after a storm in West Friesland. She was then taken, clothed and fed ordinary food. Some say that she lived for fifteen years in capture, trying to escape constantly; she was also taught to kneel before the crucifix and spin but she was never able to speak.
RAPHAEL HOLINSHED, IN HIS CHRONICLES OF 1587 wrote that in the reign of either John or Henry II, some fishers of Oreford in Suffolk, caught a man-shaped fish, who would not or could not speak, ate fish be it raw or cooked and finally escaped after two months, back to the sea.
There are detailed accounts of recorded sightings that are mostly from the 1800's that can be read in the Sightings page.

Little Mermaid - National symbol of Denmark
The symbol of Denmark
The little Mermaid sitting at Langelinie in Copenhagen, is one of Denmark's biggest tourist attractions.
The sculpture was put up in 1913, and has since then been the symbol of Denmark. Like the Eiffel tower in Paris and the statue of liberty in New York both have been very important for the two cities, so has the Little Mermaid been important for Copenhagen!
An important lady
It is easy to see that The Little Mermaid is an important lady! Morethan on million people visit the mermaid every year. Thousands of post cards and, t-shirts and other souvenirs are sold to tourists.
[b/Small ?
"She is so small", says most people seeing The Little mermaid for the first time. And she is. Only 1.25 meter (approx 4 feet) high, she is very small, sitting on her rock and looking at the water at Langelinie.
With naked breasts and fish tail
Like a real mermaid, she is half human half fish. With naked breasts and fish tail, she is in her true element when the waves hits her rock. Maybe she is dreaming about leaving the big sea to find her Prince and an immortal soul.
so what do you guys think?.... or n e one penah gi denmark n see this sculpture..? |

More info...
In the 1960's it was a huge sentation, when the mermaid lost her head for the first time.
Naturally since the Little Mermaid is the symbol of Denmark.
The sculpture became a part of the happening culture of that time because art was synonymous with action!
The writer and artist J鴕gen Nash was very early conncected with the crime, but cleared of. No one knows if Nash really did cut of the head, and rumours have circled for nearly 35 years.
People have been very excited. Would the head turn up? But nothing happened, the head did not turn up.
In a book, Jorgen Nash confesses in 1997 that he cut of the head, and threw it in small Copenhagen lake.
Now, can we believe him, or should the myth from 1964 still be kept alive?
Vandalish in more than 40 years
* On Sept. 1'st 1961, the hair of the mermaid was painted red and she was dressed in bra.
* On april 28'th 1963, she was drenched with red paint.
* On april 24'th 1964 the head was cut off for the first time. The danish artist J鴕gen Nash confessed in his book in 1997 that he had commited the crime.
* On july 15'th 1976 she was drenched with paint again
* On july 22'nd 1984 she lost her right arm. The arm was returned the day after by two young men. They had amputated the arm, while they were drunk!
* On august 5'th 1990 someone discovered that attempts had been made to cut off the head. An 18 cm long cut almost cut off the head!
* On january 6'th 1998 in the morning, the mermaid had lost her head again!
* In the morning, sept 11. 2003, the Mermaid was knocked down from her stone
October 27'th 2003: The mermaid is back on its rock
After end repair, the Mermaid is back on its rock. This morning the bronze moulder, put back the Little Mermaid on its rock at Langelinie. The Mermaid had been for repair for the damages she got, when she was exposed to vandalism one and a half month ago. |

Sekadar nak memberitahu, burung cenderawasih memang wujud. Ia hanya boleh dijumpai di Pulau Papua terutama sekali di Irian Jaya, Indonesia. |

tapi bak kata Bob KP 'baik punya cilok'..... kalau tiada angin bertiup.. masakan pokok boleh bergoyang....hehe...
aku rasa kemungkinan besar hasil mitos dr kisah pengalaman sebenar individu.... tak mustahil kalau ada org nampak kelibat duyung... member aku pun pernah nampak duyung bertenggek kat atas pokok yg tumbang dlm hutan kat kampung aku ni waktu time cari buah pokok getah masa kecik2 dulu... siap duyung tu senyum sinis kat diaorg lagi... tapi gigi spoil la sikit sbb ada taring...ahaks... padan la budak2 tu lari bertempiaran tercungap cungap! hehe...
kesimpulan nya kat sini... kalau org cita kat aku dia jumpa duyung ker bigfoot ker alien@ufo ke.. tak bermakna dia nak tipu.... cuma samaada yg dia jumpa tu betul species yg wujud kat bumi ni atau angkasa lepas... ataupun explaination yg paling logik adalah jelmaan JIN... sbbnya.. kewujudan JIN, dan kebolehan dia menjelma, tinggal di lautan, terbang ke angkasa.. mmg telah terbukti sejak zaman nabi lagi.. dan Quran juga menjelaskan akan kewujudan Manusia, JIn , Syaitan dan Iblis secara sahih tapi tak pulak menyebut makhluk lain selain haiwan dan tumbuhan, dajal dan yakjut makjut walaupun kisah alam semesta turut dihurai....
p/s: UFO dan Kenderaan Dajal... Diperumpamakan kelajuan kenderaan Dajal kelak seumpa hujan yg jatuh ke bumi... bergerak dari satu tempat ke satu tempat bagai hujan yg ditiup angin... WALLAHUALAM.... |
