The Megalodon is known principally from fossil teeth and a few fossilized vertebral centra. Like other modern sharks the skeleton of Megalodon was of cartilage and not bone, resulting in the poor skeletal fossil record. However, Megalodon's large teeth have survived the ages. The teeth are in many ways similar to great white shark teeth and can measure over seven inches long (maximum slant length).

Recent studies cited by Roesch (see external links below) suggest Megalodon was a "close relative" of the Great White. However, a growing number of researchers dispute this close Great White朚egalodon relationship, instead citing convergent evolution as the reason for the dental similarity. Nevertheless, it is extrapolations from the tooth size of Megalodon to modern sharks that provide us with our conceptions about what this ancient superpredator was like.

A fish the size of Megalodon requires huge amount of food to survive. What could sustain a Megalodon? Whales. About 20, 000 years ago, the oceans were generally warmer and were inhabited by whales. The population of whales in the oceans were plentiful hence allowing predatory fishes to grow as food is abundant.

However, a few thousand years ago, a great migration of whale into colder ocean may have triggered the demise of the giant sharks. Megalodons arent the only sharks that grew to gret size. In colder oceans, Megalodon simply couldnt survive and with the migrations of whales into deeper and colder waters, the oversized sharks seem destined to perish.

A point of contention, nobody can be certain that Megalodons have completely extinct. Think of that when you are about to jump into the water the next time you go to the beach.

Now, if you are a great fan on the studies of sharks, please note that the movie Jaws by Speilberg in 1975 was based on the fact of a megalodon suriving to this era.
