New York will host a commemoration ceremony later today to mark the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001.
US vice-president Joe Biden will attend the ceremony at Ground Zero, which will see the names of the thousands of people who died in the attacks read out.
The ceremony will pause at four moments to mark the impacts of the planes on each of the World Trade Centre's twin towers, on the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.
At 08:46 local time (13:46 GMT), bells will be tolled at places of worship across the city to denote the moment when the North Tower was first hit by a hijacked plane.
The ceremony comes after US pastor Terry Jones first announced then pulled plans to burn hundreds of copies of the Koran on the anniversary of 9/11.
He decided not to go ahead with the event after claiming that a proposal to build a Muslim centre and mosque near Ground Zero had been changed to move the building further away from the site of the attacks.
However, the people behind the centre denied this change in plan, prompting Mr Jones - of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida - to instead state that the Koran burnings had only been suspended.
Events will also take place in London today to mark the 9/11 anniversary. |
