Due to heavy rainfall a crane fell in Al- Haram, Makkah. Many have embraced martyrdom while the others have been injured severely.

1. 107 maut, 238 cedera

The death toll in a crane accident at the Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca rose to 107 on Friday (September 11), the head of Saudi Arabia's civil defence authority told Al Ikhbariya television. He said 238 people had been injured. The accident came just weeks before Islam's annual haj pilgrimage. Al Arabiya television earlier said the crane had fallen because of strong storms - western Saudi Arabia has been hit by strong sand storms in the last few days. Saudi authorities go to great lengths to prepare for the millions of Muslim who converge on Mecca to perform the sacred pilgrimage. Last year, it reduced the numbers permitted to perform haj for safety reasons because of construction work to enlarge the Grand Mosque. The pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, has been prone to disasters in the past, mainly from stampedes as pilgrims rushed to complete rituals and return home. Hundreds of pilgrims died in such a stampede in 2006. Saudi authorities have since lavished vast sums to expand the main haj sites and improve Mecca's transportation system, in an effort to prevent more disasters. Security services often ring Islam's sacred city with checkpoints and other measures to prevent people arriving for the pilgrimage without authorization. Those procedures, aimed at reducing crowd pressure which can lead to stampedes, fires and other hazards, have been intensified in recent years as security threats grow throughout the Middle East.

2. Kronologi kejadian

1. Insiden Kren tumbang di Masjidil Haram berlaku pada hari Jumaat, jam 5.00 petang waktu Saudi, 11 September 2015.
2. Bermula dengan ribut pasir dan hujan lebat. Kren yang tumbang berhampiran pintu As Salam bersebelahan bangunan Sa’ie. Kren yang tumbang telah menimpa Bangunan Sa’ie tersebut dan sebahagian daripada rangkanya telah jatuh di bangunan Sa’ei berdekatan dengan mataf.
3. Pasukan mencari dan menyelamat TH seramai 30 orang yang terdiri daripada Pasukan Perubatan, Kebajikan dan Peronda dikerahkan ke tempat kejadian sebaik sahaja berita diterima daripada pasukan peronda bertugas di dalam Masjidil Haram.
4. Hasil operasi tersebut telah mengenal pasti seramai 10 Jemaah haji Malaysia terlibat dalam kemalangan.
5. Pasukan mencari dan menyelamat TH telah memberi bantuan kepada para Jemaah Haji dan juga memberi rawatan di tempat kejadian oleh pasukan perubatan.
6. Pasukan ini masih memantau situasi dan mengenal pasti jumlah sebenar Jemaah Haji Malaysia yang terlibat.
7. Pasukan Perubatan TH juga telah pergi kesemua Hospital Arab Saudi bagi mengenal pasti sekiranya terdapat Jemaah Haji Malaysia yang terlibat dihantar ke Hospital Arab Saudi untuk rawatan.
8. Operasi mencari dan menyelamat ini selesai pada jam 11.45 malam apabila semua kawasan di dalam dan sekitar masjid diperiksa dengan rapi.
9. Seramai 3 Jemaah Haji Malaysia kini di rawat Hospital Arab Saudi; 6 di Pusat Rawatan TH dan 1 telah dibenarkan pulang ke bilik penginapan.
10. Kesemua Jemaah Haji yang terlibat dengan kemalangan ini dilaporkan stabil.
11. Pada masa yang sama Pengurusan Maktab telah membuat semakan dari bilik ke bilik pada jam 10.00 malam bagi memastikan semua jemaah haji Malaysia selamat.
12. Pada jam 4.00 pagi waktu Saudi 12 September 2015 didapati 6 orang jemaah haji masih belum dapat di kesan iaitu 2 lelaki dan 4 perempuan.
13. TH sedang bekerjasama dengan pihak Muasassah Asia Tenggara bagi mencari jemaah haji tersebut. Operasi ini diteruskan sehingga Jemaah tersebut ditemui/dikenal pasti.
14. Pada masa kini mengikut laporan yang dikeluarkan oleh pihak berkuasa Arab Saudi, seramai 107 kematian dan 238 kecederaan.

8. Seorang lagi jemaah haji Malaysia, Zainun Taha 69 tahun dari Ampang disahkan meninggal dunia.

9. King Salman declares SR 300,000 ($80,000) for each Martyr of Makkah Incident

By now, all of us know about the sad incident of Makkah which took place last week and took life of 111 people and more than 270 were injured. Most of these people came from different countries to perform Hajj. The pressure of wind on that day was around 60km per hour. Makkah has never witnessed a sandstorm with that high pressure. A crane could not sustain that pressure and fell down. Anyway, it was a natural disaster and one has nothing to say a lot about it. The steps taken by the Saudi government to compensate the victims of the Makkah incident are remarkable.

King Salman, the custodian of the two holy mosques went himself to the affected area and monitored the rescue work. King Salman went to the hospitals to attend the patients. King Salman also ordered the free medical aid to each and every injured person of the Makkah Incident. King Salman has also given orders to buy special vehicles for the injured and handicapped victims of the Makkah incident. If King Salman is doing all this for the injured people, how could he skip the one who are martyred? Today, it has been published in the news that King Salman has declared SR 300,000 ($80,000) compensation for each martyr of Makkah Incident.

No one can bring back the loss of a human being. Obviously, King Salman cannot bring back the lives of those people. But he is doing everything to financially support the legal heirs and families of deceased people so that they can spend a normal life. An amount of SR 36,630,000/- ($8.8 million) will be paid to the legal heirs of the deceased people of Makkah incident. It is reported that this amount will be charged by the Saudi government to the contractors of the Haram expansion project.

Now a question arises, how the legal heirs of the Makkah incident claim this amount from the government? The procedure has not been established by the Saudi Government yet but Saudis will be required to contact Ministry of Interior of Saudi Arabia. However, foreigners will be required to process their claim through their respective embassies. Embassies will be governed with the responsibility to make sure that the amount is actually paid to the legal dependents of the victims.

If you have lost someone in this incident and you are living in your home country, you need to contact your foreign office to ask them about the procedure to claim this money. Normally, this procedure is adopted to get Death Compensation.
