He was born in the mid 1430抯. We firstmet him at a wedding of Jebat抯 eldest sister right after thecoronation of Raja Kassim (Sultan Muzaffar Shah). He was olderthan the 7 of us although I suspect Jebat was slightly older than himbecause his voice broke much earlier than Tuah. Jebat was our group leaderthen. The rest of us were myself, Lekir, Lekiu, Hassan, Hussainand Iskandar. Jebat抯 sister had just married Bentara HamzahDatuk Bongkok. Hamzah was recently appointed as Bentara in the newSultan抯 court and we all wanted to be just like him.
During the day, we imagined ourselves as theyoung Melaka heroes who would vanquish the armies of Siam or fight theJavanese pirates singlehandedly and save Melaka from any invaders forever. And at night, all 8 of us would gather at Hamzah抯 house and listen to hisadventures in the palace.
Through the advice of Hamzah, we were sent toGunung Ledang to learn martial arts from his former mentor, Sang Adiputra. Westayed there for 2 years. Hassan, Hussain and Iskandar did not comewith us as their parents moved to Inderapura (now Pahang).
I remember Sang Adiputra once foretold that Jebatwould have been a greater warrior than Tuah but his own recklessnesswill be his downfall. Jebat was clearly a stronger warrior than Tuah. Buthe was impatient at times and where Tuah lack in strength, he made it up withtremendous agility and cunning. Thus, a stronger warrior does not mean a betterone. It was there in one of the caves in Gunung Ledang that Tuah was made ourleader. Sang Adiputra told Jebat to listen to Tuah and never doubthis actions. To Tuah, he adviced him to be sincere and serve Melaka as he seesfit. Above all, he wanted all of us to take care of each other.
Upon our return, Melaka had a new Bendahara whomeveryone had proclaimed a hero upon his victory over the Siamese armies upnorth. Tun Perak was indeed a charismatic Bendahara. He was in his 30抯 when hebecame a Bendahara. Tall and almost regal in nature, he inherited the qualitesof his late father, the old bendahara during Sultan Muhammad Shah抯 reign.

In the end, nearly 20 of the orang laut hadbeen killed while Jebat and myself were slightly wounded in thelegs. Lekir lost his little finger in the process. Only Tuah was leftunscratched. Tun Perak was so impressed that he appointed all of us asBiduanda and we worked as Tun Perak抯 special retinue from henceforth.

We were living in an exciting times as SultanMuzaffar Shah was the first of the warrior sultan in the dynasty. All hisprevious ancestors were more of a merchant than a warrior. Melaka was in themidst of expansion and we were swept along with it. We travelled alot during those days. All of us even followed the younger brother ofTun Perak (Tun Perpatih Putih) to Beijingas part of an envoy to help bolster the diplomatic relations between Melaka andChina.Emperor Zheng Tong was so pleased with the eloquent speech of Tun PerpatihPutih and the gifts by Sultan Mansur Shah that he gave one of his niece, LiPoh to become a wife to the Sultan.

At first Princess Li Poh was notpleased and would show her sadness openly during our voyage home. But duringthe journey, Jebat would use his charm and tell funny stories to sootheher worry. We even called her 扝ang

Jebat wanted Patih Kerma Wijaya抯 blood inexchange for the palace. Most of the Sultan抯 concubines decided to staywith Jebat for reasons I do not know. Jebat was indeed good lookingand was popular with the ladies in the court. Pateh Kerma Wijaya was holedup in Bendahara抯 house for a couple of weeks. Although Tun Perak despisedhim, he was still a diplomatic ambassador from an allied nation.

At the end of 1464, Pateh Kerma Wijaya waskilled in an ambush by Jebat two days before the monsoon season. Runningscared, the Sultan asked the 3 of us to confront Jebat. Relunctantly, we obeyedthe orders. But Jebat would not fight us or even listen to us. The palace thathe reigned supreme now was like a fortress.
One night after a full cycle of the moon, TunPerak summoned me to his house. He was grief strickened and wanted me to findan old hermit called Sang Rajuna Tapa. I reckoned Tun Perakwas delirious from having a high fever. Sang Rajuna Tapa was certainly nohermit. He was the legendary Bendahara during Parameswara抯 rule in Temasik. How could he still be alive? He must close to be a hundred by then. But inhaste I did go to Ulu Melaka.

I was shocked that Tun Perak had beenhiding Sang Rajuna Tapa and Tuah in Ulu Melaka. Sang Rajuna Tapa wasindeed an old man and had disguised himself as an old imam called SyeikhMansur. Years ago, he was banished from Temasik and was told never tocome back. Tuah had been learning some secrets of theart from him. He looked refreshed there in Ulu Melaka. I wasoverjoyed upon seeing him. But sad at the same time. Tun Perak should have notkept this secret from us. But then again, Tun Perak and Hang Tuah wereof the same breed of warriors.

The day Tuah fought Jebat was not as what wasdepicted by the storytellers. Jebat had indeed became more bloodthirsty by theminute. He was practically ruling Melaka with an iron grip. Tradersshunned our ports and the coffers dwindled.
It was after the Friday prayers when Tuah reachedthe palatial gates. With Pamung Sari in his hand, we and about 200 of usswarmed the locked main entrance. Tuah called on Jebat to come out. It took himabout an hour to answer Tuah抯 challenge. By this time, the people ofMelaka had surrounded the palace, wanting to see the duel. I estimated about20,000 people had came to watch them fight.

Jebat was happy upon seeing Tuah. But hislaughter was not only hysterical, it was tinged with madness. Jebat thenkilled one of the concubines just to whet Taming Sari抯 appetite. Jebatoffered to fight on the courtyard but Tuah declined. He said it抯 betterto fight inside the palace so that the people will not see the death of eitherone of them.
Storm raged Melaka that night. We knew that aterrible duel was taken place above the howling wind. We waited outside tillthe next morning. Sometimes they would rest, sometimes Jebat would letTuah pray undisturbed. Tuah later on told me that Jebat declinedto pray because his sins were already too great to be forgiven byGod. By late afternoon, we heard the death cries of Jebat from theinside. Tuah came rushing out. His face was ashen while his body wascovered in blood. He threw Taming Sari to me and ran towards theparted crowd.

We went inside the palace but lo andbehold! Jebat was still alive! But his stomach was badly wounded. He wasbusy wrapping the angry wound with a piece of cloth so that his gutwouldn抰 spill out. Jebat was a strong warrior indeed. Seeing his death face,Lekiu, Lekir and myself left him there attending to himself as the sight wastoo much for us.

It was hard enough for Tuah to contain Jebat whenhe was angered and it was extremely difficult for the Royal Guards to subduethe wounded Jebat. Nearly a hundred of innocent people died in his rampagein search of the Sultan. Finally exhausted, Jebat came over to Tuah抯 house. Wewere there when Tuah lifted him up into one of the rooms. Jebatmanaged to ask forgiveness from all of us for his treachery andfor acting without our consent. We shed a few tears then. Jebatdied in Tuah抯 arms as the wrappings were undone. Blood flowed freely fromhis mouth, nose, ears, eyes and every pores of his body.

From that day onwards, Tuah became adifferent man. He became deeply religious. He followed the Arabtraders back to the heart of Ottoman Empire in Turkey just to learn moreabout Islam. The death of Jebat changed him. Jebat was his conscience attimes. Sometimes, his wild streak. He was more ferocious when Jebatwas fighting alongside him. The death of Jebat showed him how greatlyJebat was needed. During the reign of Raja Hussain (Sultan Alauddin RiayatShah), Laksamana Tun Tuah had always wanted to leave the life of theroyal courts. But not until Raja Hussain was poisoned to death in Pagoh didTuah left in such agony. His heart broke yet again when he was unable toprevent the death of the young Sultan.

I was made Maharaja Setia (deputyBendahara) and Jebat抯 only son, Khoja Hassan took over as Orang KayaLaksamana Melaka in 1488. Incidentally, Khoja Hassan was also Tuah抯 sonin law. Tun Tuah was called into service one last time during thereign of the petulant Sultan Mahmud Shah as the head of retinue to find PuteriGunung Ledang.

Until this day, the day I find rest at last, I amglad to have Hang Tuah as my brother. His steadfast loyalty and unwaveringstance to protect the system was like a beacon in the days we weatheredthrough. Tuah was given a terrible choice which he then chose as he saw itfit. Hopefully, the new Bendahara, Tun Mutahir will find new breed ofyoung Malay warriors to protect what we have now against the dark days ahead.

Addendum by Jebat Must Die
Hang Tuah never met Puteri Gunung Ledang. Hewas already in his 60抯 when the young Sultan Mahmud asked him to be the headof retinue to propose the mythical (non existent) Puteri Gunung Ledang for herhand in marriage. Halfway to the top of the mountain, Tun Mamat (some sayit was actually Paduka Mimat - the Sultan抯 uncle) continued his wayupwards alone, leaving the tired Tun Tuah and the rest of theretinue at the foot of the mountain.

Hang Tuah did not kill Hang Jebat during thatfinal fight in the Sultan抯 palace. Hang Jebat died a day after thefight because of the heavy stomach wound inflicted by Hang Tuah. HangJebat managed to wrap the wounds around his stomach before he ran amokand killed more innocent people on the streets of Melaka. Hethen went straight to Tuah抯 house where Hang Tuah wasmeditating and seeking repentance. Hang Jebat died in the arms of Hang Tuahwhen he released open the wrappings around Jebat抯 stomach toease the pain.

It was not Hang Tuah who had kidnapped Tun Tejafrom Pahang for Sultan Mahmud but rather, it was his son in law, Hang Nadim. Itwas unlikely Hang Tuah could even entice the lovely Tun Teja to elope with himat that time because he was already an old man. Remember, Hang Tuah wasalready in his 60抯 when Sultan Mahmud started to reign. At that time, HangTuah had past his prime and Melaka was under the watchful eyeof Laksamana Khoja Hassan, the son of the late Hang Jebat whom he hadadopted as his own. Khoja Hassan eventually became his son in law. His otherson in law, Hang Nadim was second in command.

He was not a Chinese as some speculated. Thestory of a DNA tested on the bonesof Hang Tuah by a Michiganbased forensic society was a hoax. The society does noteven exist. The theory of having the same surname as Princess Hang Li Pohdoes not hold water. The name 慔ang

I know it must sounds weird, but this article also menyedarkan saya betapa hebatnya ilmu persilatan Melayu ini. (Saya orang silat, sebab tuh rasa bangga bila baca artikel ni.Naik semangat saya).

Kalau org Cina Malaysia kata Hang Tuah sebagai Cina hanya sebab die ade 'Hang' kat name die....maka semua Melayu Pulau Pinang tuh Cina laa sebab diorg pun selalu guna kata 'Hang'.

Contoh, "Hang nak pi mana?" - Cina jugak ke die nie?

tok_wann minta maaf kerana lambat balas....gi out station.

Semakin menarik topik nih.
