Entertainment during Idul Fitri can be very predictable. But with the holiday falling mid-year in recent years, Indonesian film enthusiasts have been able to enjoy foreign summer blockbusters as well as religious-themed Indonesian dramas during their break.

The success of “Ayat-Ayat Cinta” (“The Verses of Love”) in 2008 sparked a “religi-drama” film trend in Indonesia, with a wave of similar movies following.

Now fans of the genre can check out “La Tahzan” (“Don’t Be Sad”), starring Atiqah Hasiholan, Joe Taslim and Ario Bayu, which opens in cinemas today.
The film moves beyond the usual elements of the genre, looking not just at Islamic faith but also at how practicing young Indonesian Muslims navigate the world among non-Muslims.

“The film is set in Japan, so there’s an added value to the story,” said Joe, who plays a half-Indonesian, half-Japanese man named Yamada in “La Tahzan.”

The movie follows Viona (Atiqah), an Indonesian student fond of Japanese culture, ranging from the language to the culinary art of sushi to all things Hello Kitty. When she fulfills her dream and moves to Japan to study, she meets Yamada.

They grow close, and Yamada eventually asks Viona to be his wife, saying he is willing to convert to Islam if she accepts. But when Viona’s long-lost friend Hasan (Ario) shows up unexpectedly to win her heart back, a love triangle emerges.

“La Tahzan” is based on the short story “Orenji” by Ellnovianty Nine. It appeared in the book “La Tahzan for Students,” a compilation of stories by Indonesian students in Japan based on a best-selling Islamic motivational book.

“La Tahzan” is the directorial debut of Danial Rifki, with scriptwriting from Jujur Prananto.
