Kat Malaysia ramai players yg merempat miskin selepas bersara, tapi ada juga yg tak begitu. Tengok international punya stars macam mana....

Soccer is a temporary career. While some players last into their late thirties, most aren’t so lucky. I would estimate that the average age of retirement is under the age of 35, which is unfortunate considering you must play to that age to earn a pension. While most superstars land on their feet, others are usually not as lucky. These players grow accustomed to the lavish lifestyle and are unable to scale back. Worse, most these players have no education or job experience to help them land a job. In a previous post, I discussed how Neil Webb struggled to find a second career. Like many uneducated footballers, Webb found it difficult to acquire and maintain employment. While some players find a second passion, others spend years being depressed that their career is over, often jumping from job to job. Who can blame them? You’re in the prime and you have more in common with your grandparents than your peers.

I had often wondered what most soccer players did to earn money after their illustrious soccer career was over. So, I compiled a comprehensive list of the most common careers among retired footballers. Typically, retired players resort to careers involving soccer. However, some players have taken non-traditional means of employment. Here is that list:

1. Manager: This is the career of choice for players. Most player’s forays into management often end unfavorably. However, there have been players such as Harry Redknapp and Franz Breckenbauer who have successful adapted to the transition of top player into star manager. Other notable players who have dabbled in management are Diego Maradona, Didi, and Ruud Gullit.

2. Sports Pundit: The second most popular career choice after retirement is sports casting. For players, the transition of the post-match interviewee into the interviewer is an easy one. For well-spoken and relatively attractive footballers, this is an easy fit. Players such as Gary Lineker, Jamie Redknapp, and Alan Hensen have made solid long-lasting careers as a sports pundit.

3. Youth Coach: Another possibility for players is to teach youngsters the sport by opening their own soccer academy. Neville Southall owns and operates his own soccer academy. La Galaxy’s David Beckham currently owns two soccer academies in the US and UK.

4. TV Presenter: Peter Schmeichel has hosted several television programs including Discovery Channel’s ‘Dirty Jobs, European Edition’. Then, there is Glenn Hysen who hosts his own reality TV show called ‘FC Z’ which takes 15 men between the age of 18 and 31 who have never played football before and train them so they can play against a real team.

5. Actor: It is said everyone wishes to follow Vinnie Jones to Hollywood. However, he isn’t the first former-footballer to successful emerge into acting. Anthony Lapaglia is better known for his acting than his days as an Australian footballer. Other footballers have also dabbled lightly into acting including Pele, David Beckham, and Sol Campbell.

6. Music Impresario: Many athletes think they are the next Jay-Z or Bon Jovi. It’s common for music-loving athletes during their soccer career to release albums or start their own labels. Rio Ferdinand owns his own studio and, Ryan Babel has released his own records. It was quite shocking to hear that Tomas Brolin released a record with Dr. Albans in Sweden. Even though the movie and music business is the least reliable to make money, that didn’t stop Thomas Hassler from opening his own label which is quite successful in Germany.

7. Humanitarian: Many big name players, who rely on their brand to earn money, have the financial means to donate their time to human rights and other charitable causes. This is the career path of soccer legend Pele, who is a goodwill ambassador and works with UNICEF. Other humanitarians include George Weah, Alan Shearer, and Roger Milla.

8. Construction: For the less resourceful, I would recommend a job in construction. This seems to be a profession where many footballers wind up due to insufficient work and educational experience. Both Ivan Nielsen and Sir Tom Finney currently work as plumbers in their respective countries, and Alun Evans is a house painter.

9. Mailman: Like plumbing, this is a common career path among footballers who have no work experience or education. This is the career choice of both Neil Webb and Barry van Aerie in their native lands.

10. Sports Agent: For those players who are smart, have the ability to network, and can negotiate, this is the career path for you. Swedish footballer Roger Ljung is a successful sports agent who has represented Fredrik Ljungberg , Kim Kallstrom, and Marcus Allback. Other footballers turned agents are Martin Dahlin and Jan Olsson. Guess this a good career path if you are Swedish.

11. Finance: For those who are smart and good at business, try a career in high finance. Peter Collins is a market trader and Espen Baardsen is a wealth manager. Also, Seattle Sounders‘s Fredrik Ljungberg owns a share of wealth management firm, Quesada.

12. Journalist: After his fall from grace, recently divorced Bobby Moore tried his hand at sports writing for the Sunday Sports. Other footballers turned journalist Laurent Pagnelli and John Cameron (1872-1935).

13. Law & Government: Since most players are well liked and already immensely popular, why not go into politics. George Weah returned to his homeland of Liberia to run in the 2005 Presidential Election. Despite his best efforts, he lost and returned to his home in Staten Island, New York. If living in the spotlight no longer interests you, perhaps a career in law would. Gudni Bergsson went back to his native Iceland and became a lawyer. Paul Ferris became a barrister and currently is a part of Alan Shearer’s management team.

14. Culinary Industry: While many high profile celebrities open their own restaurant to little success, some are more fortunate. Englishmen Keith Bradley and John Connelly own their own restaurants. Meanwhile, Wyn Davies is a baker and David Ginola is a wine maker.

15. Agricultural: You can follow in the footsteps of Italian player Robert Baggio and English player David Harvey. Baggio owns his own ranch in Argentina where he currently resides. Also, David Harvey owns and runs his own farm in Leeds. On a similar note, Dundee United Davy Bowman and his wife own and operate a flower shop, and Klas Ingesson fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a lumberjack.

16. Hotelier: For those who are more adventurous, New Castle’s Andy Hunt and his wife, former MTV VJ Simone Angel, own their own jungle resort and travel company in Belize.

17. Fashion: Martin Dahlin has his own range of clothes in Sweden. Current Arsenal player Arshavin actually studied fashion in University. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if he pursued his own fashion line after retirement. While David Beckham has just designed a line for Adidas, both Ronaldinho and Cristiano Ronaldo own their own ranges with headline stores in their respective homelands.

18. Medical: Before Paul Ferris became a barrister, he enjoyed a career as a physio, aka physical trainer. Also, Phil Kite, Doug Ithier, and Steve Whitehall all became physios upon retirement.

19. Retail: For those players who are considered people-persons, perhaps retail is the industry for you. Brett Angell currently works the night shift at Tesco. On the other hand, John Chiedioze owns and operates his own children’s party supply company in which he rents inflatable bouncy castles.

20. Undertaker: If all else fails, you can always follow the steps of Ray Wilson. Wilson is an undertaker. Don’t laugh because an undertaker can make anywhere from $50,000 to $90,000. Not bad considering, you only need to take a short course to obtain a mortuary license. No other work or educational experience
