Hazama Returns With a Wow - NST
The winner of the final edition of Akademi Fantasia tells DENNIS CHUA he owes it all to having honed his talents in a rock group
IN 2006, Akademi Fantasia’s irrepressible host, Aznil Nawawi, told Hazama Azmi that he did not make the cut for the show’s fourth season despite performing a brilliant Ramli Sarip number Zakiah at the prelude concert at Astro.
Nevertheless, Ramli, also the season’s principal, advised him to keep bettering himself so he could offer the wow factor.
Hazama took Papa Rock’s kindly advice and performed with various rock groups as a session vocalist. He soon became the lead singer of award-winning Meet Uncle Hussain (MUH) upon the departure of Azlan Roslee in 2009.
“Singing for MUH was a great training ground for me. I’ll always be thankful to my band mates for roping me in,” he says.
Hazama also performed for concerts produced by Astro such as the annual Marhaban Di Astro and Gempaq Selebriti Astro.
This way, he reached out to fans and influenced Astro’s decision to rope him into AF9 as a wildcard.
“I’ll always be grateful to Astro for giving me a chance. Being a part of AF is a bonus,” says Hazama, 28, who cites Amy Search as his idol.
At 11.35pm on June 12, in the final concert of AF9 broadcast live from Dataran Putrajaya, Ipoh-born Hazama won the top prize of RM200,000 with a whopping 45 per cent of viewers’ Short Messaging Service votes.
Kota Kinabalu-born dangdut fan Lena Haidir, 20, finished second with 28 per cent of votes.
Vocal powerhouse and youngest contestant Fina Jebat, 18, of Malacca, obtained 15 per cent, and Klang-born rock fan Azri Abdullah, 25, obtained 12.
It was a virtual repeat of Mawi’s victory in AF3. Hazama’s victory was certain from the looks of the 6,000-strong audience at the square. The majority carried banners supporting him and many wore the red and yellow T-shirts of his fan club.
Modest in victory, Hazama paid tribute to his fellow contestants, describing them as winners in their own right. He praised Fina as a super singer in the making, and her family pal, the fifth-placed Erul Samah, as the only Malaysian who excelled in K-Pop.
He thanked judges Fauziah Ahmad Daud and Hattan for their honesty and winning tips, and principal Amy Search and his team of instructors for pushing him to greater heights.
Lena paid tribute to her heroes — AF2 runner-up Adam Mat Saman, Mentor 1 winner Pija Yasin, Malaysian Idol 1 finalist Nikki Palikat, and One In A Million 2 winner Ayu Damit for inspiring her.
“They showed me that anybody with talent and the right attitude can make it,” she says.
Fina described AF9 as her first major singing contest. She thanked her elder sister Aida, who finished 11th, and Erul, for encouraging her to “go all out and win”.
“While I didn’t win, I’m delighted to have made a name for myself in AF. Aida, our younger sister Sabira and I make up six-year-old pop group Sassu,” she says.
Faizal Tahir fan Azri says his experience with rock group, The Breakfast Band, over the last two years prepared him mentally for AF9.
“I also joined My Starz LG on TV3. Experience is the best teacher,” he says.
Each contestant sang two songs, a cover and a new composition. The show, which took place on an open stage, kicked off at 9pm with Lena singing Bunkface’s hit Dunia.
Fauziah, Hattan and guest judge Datuk Ramli M S felt her delivery lacked oomph. She did better in the haunting original song Sisa Kisah Kita created by Kuncidemak, accompanied by actor Shaheizy Sam on the piano.
The judges felt that Azri, who sang Aku Tak Bisa by Slank and the original Niskala by Omar K, performed much better in the weekly concerts.
Joined by her sisters Aida and Sabira of Sassu, Fina mesmerised the crowd with Jaclyn Victor’s Satu Harapan.
The judges, however, preferred her heartfelt rendition of Menangis Lagi created by Edrie Hashim.
Fina performed this song sitting on a gigantic crescent moon, reminiscent of the Dreamworks logo.
Hazama proved to be the superior showman. His first song, Tomok’s hit Pukau, began with a video of him running along Putrajaya’s streets towards the stage.
Leaping onto the stage in the gothic outfit he wore in the video, he wasted no time prancing, crawling and dancing to his song. The crowd went ecstatic, and it appeared that the concert was his.
Fauziah, Ramli and Hattan described his act as “spellbinding”, and were equally pleased with his original song, Cinta Teragung, written and composed by Kuncidemak.
“You have the makings of our next big rock star,” says Hattan.
Hazama also took home a hamper worth RM5,000 and a Sony Handycam. Lena won RM50,000 and a RM2,000 hamper, while Fina won RM20,000 and a RM1,000 hamper, and Azri won RM5,000. The three of them also took home Sony Cybershots.
The two-hour concert saw performances by Search, former AF champions and the other contestants of AF9.
Aznil and former hosts AC Mizal, Sarimah Ibrahim and Jimmy Shanley co-hosted the show.
Astro Ria channel manager Azlin Reza Azmi says votes cast this year had increased by 70 per cent. Last year, 3.8 million votes were cast by AF fans. “We are happy to note that the final AF has seen a healthy increase in votes, thanks to the quality of its contestants. The popularity of returning host Aznil has also helped.”
Azlin says there is no doubt that the reality talent show had become an iconic and unifying part of local television.
Amy Search says while his students were a little “slow” in the first two weeks, they subsequently pushed themselves hard, because of the entry of Hazama and Fina as wildcards in the third week.

Hazama rancang kenduri kesyukuran juarai AF9 - Harian Metro
KUALA LUMPUR: Juara Akademi Fantasia yang kesembilan (AF9), Hazama bercadang untuk mengadakan kenduri kesyukuran berikutan kemenangan diraihnya dalam konsert akhir program realiti TV itu, Ahad lalu.
Hazama berkata, kenduri akan diadakan itu sebagai tanda kesyukuran selain meraikan sanak-saudaranya, tenaga pengajar, rakan artis, pihak media dan peminat yang selama ini menyokongnya.
“Dalam minggu ini kemungkinan akan mengadakan kenduri kesyukuran di rumah ibu saudara di Manjoi, Perak khas untuk penduduk kampung sebelum mengadakannya untuk rakan artis dan pihak media dalam masa terdekat,” katanya ketika dihubungi.
Ditanya mengenai perkahwinannya, katanya dia merancang mendirikan rumahtangga dalam tempoh tiga tahun lagi dan mengakui sedang mengenali hati budi seorang wanita.
“Saya memang bercadang berkahwin tetapi buat masa ini saya harus memikirkan menamatkan pengajian terlebih dulu dan memberikan perhatian pada karier. yang sedang meningkat naik ini.
“Soal rumah tangga, semua orang mahu kahwin tetapi bagi saya biarlah ia dilakukan secara berperingkat,” katanya.
Hazama berkata, tumpuannya kini lebih terarah menamatkan pengajian Sarjana Muda Komunikasi Massa di Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) bagi Program Jarak Jauh (PJJ) selepas terpaksa menangguhnya pada semester empat kerana menyertai AF9.
“Saya kini dibuai mimpi dengan kemenangan ini tetapi ia sebenarnya adalah cabaran baru kepada saya bagaimana untuk menguruskan pengajian, kerjaya, keluarga dan gerbang perkahwinan,” katanya.
Menurut Hazama, walaupun kini bernaung di bawah syarikat Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd (AESB), dia masih boleh bergabung tenaga bersama kumpulan Meet Uncle Hussain (MUH) sekiranya dipanggil dan mempunyai masa terluang.
“Sebenarnya saya hanya penyanyi sandaran MUH dan pernah bersama menyertai Program Gempak Desa dan Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian (ABPBH). Saya berpendapat kejuaraan dirangkul mungkin disebabkan kelebihan sudah dikenali peminat sebelum ini,” katany |
