Rafael Nadal has appendicitis. Has decided to try and play Shanghai. Will decide on surgery/rest of the season when he returns home. #atp

Nadal started to feel pain when he arrived in Shanghai. Went to the hospital. Underwent aggressive antibiotic treatment. Feels better.

Nadal: If there is no risk for getting worse, is the same lose than if you don't play. If I don't play, I don't have the possibility to win.

Nadal: "I am not going to go for surgery. That's great news for me today. That's why I'm here practicing for 45 minutes, and trying to play tomorrow."

Sharapova with a shot at No. 1 at Singapore season-ender

Victory in Beijing has taken Maria Sharapova to No. 2 in the WTA rankings and gives her an opportunity to finish the season at No. 1, but the Russian will not be changing her schedule to do it.

Having begun the year at No. 9 after returning from shoulder injury, Sharapova is now less than 500 points behind Serena Williams for the season, with titles at the French Open, Madrid, and Beijing. Sharapova has accumulated 6,680 points so far, compared to Williams’ 7,146, with the WTA Finals coming up.

The winner of the WTA Finals, a round-robin event, earns 1,500 points; the runner-up gets 1,050 and semifinalists get 690. If Williams, who withdrew from Beijing with a knee injury, does not play the WTA Finals or loses some matches—competitors earn 70 points per round-robin match, with the winner getting an additional 90—Sharapova would be positioned to reach No. 1 with a good performance.

Sharapova could elect to enter Moscow next week, with 470 points going to the winner, but is planning to stick to her original schedule.

"I don't think I've ever done that in my career, add a few tournaments to my schedule to gain points, in order to find a certain ranking. Never in the juniors, never in the pros," she said. "Most important is to be healthy.

“Of course, it's an incredible achievement if I could do it, considering where I started the year. But in the meantime I know I've had a great year and I'm going to go into the last tournament that I have just wanting to elevate my performance, use this week as a great stepping stone in the right direction, and finish it off well.”

Williams is defending champion at the WTA Finals.

rafa fan comment:

It seems beating Rafa is always a historical victory. No matter if he has just come back from injury. Klizan will probably lose in the next round, like 90% of players who have beaten Rafa.

and he'll get injured and/or demotivated, to boot.

Rafael Nadal was today announced a "Friend of the Australian Open" at official Australian Open 2015 launch events in Melbourne and Shanghai.

Melbourne VIC, Australia, 7 October 2014 | Tennis Australia9651

Rafael Nadal was today announced a Friend of the Australian Open at official Australian Open 2015 launch events in Melbourne and Shanghai.

I like to think Ive always been friendly with the Australian Open, but Im excited it is now official, the 2009 mens singles champion joked.

Im already focused on coming back to the Australian Open in January. It was a very emotional tournament for me this year. For me, it is important to win the Australian Open again and to achieve that, I need to continue to work hard, stay healthy and be able to compete.

Its a tournament I love so much, where the warm conditions are great and there is a fantastic crowd.

There is a great atmosphere, the facilities are amazing and each year they keep improving. Its the beginning of the year and everyone, the fans, the staff and the volunteers, are all very happy and friendly and in a good mood, Nadal continued.

Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley formally named Rafael Nadal a Friend of the Australian Open at this mornings tournament launch at Melbourne Park, staged on the newly redeveloped Margaret Court Arena.

Friends of the Australian Open is a new concept helping to promote Australias Grand Slam on the world stage.

Without a doubt Rafael Nadal is one of the most exciting sportsmen in the world today, Tiley said.

Rafa exemplifies the values we all work hard to uphold excellence, humility, teamwork and loyalty and its a coup for us to work with him to promote not just our event, but our wonderful sport, around the world.

Nadal will collaborate with Tennis Australia to stage a special charity event on Wednesday 14 January at Margaret Court Arena ahead of Australian Open 2015.

Ive heard that the new roof on Margaret Court Arena is now finished and the pictures Ive seen are amazing. The Australian fans are always fantastic and I hope theyll come and experience the finished stadium at my special charity event, said the 14-time Grand Slam champion.

Tennis Australia Commercial Director Richard Heaselgrave and Australian tennis champion Todd Woodbridge hosted guests of Kia and ANZ at the launch function in Shanghai as part of a new series of events scheduled to be rolled out in Asia over the next 12 months.

Events like this show how serious the Australian Open is about doing business and promoting the sport and our events in Asia, Heaselgrave said.

Its wonderful to have a champion like Rafael Nadal, a true friend of the Australian Open, associated with our event.

This is just the beginning of our new focus in the region which will see us grow and create new content for multiple platforms, increasing exposure and opportunities for our partners, Heaselgrave continued.
