Good response for RWMF volunteers
RESPONSE to Sarawak Tourism Board's (STB) call for people to volunteer for the upcoming Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) was overwhelming with 497 forms received when the recruitment closed on March 31.
Of the total number, 20 per cent were from those who had volunteered in previous RWMF while the rest were from new applicants. The bulk of the forms were received from locals who made up 45 per cent of the total number of submissions. Another 35 per cent were received from those living in other states in Malaysia while 20 per cent were foreigners from Singapore, Scotland, France, Australia, England, New Zealand and Philippines. Those who intended to volunteer at the festival also came from all ways of life including students of higher learning institution and professionals like doctors, engineers, bankers and high ranking government officers.
This year the RWMF organising committee also received the forms from a family of four apart from some husband and wife teams who are keen to volunteer at the festival which will be staged at the Sarawak Cultural Village from July 10 to 12.
STB had always acknowledged the importance of the volunteers who assisted the organising committee in ensuring the smooth running of the festival.
In fact, STB Chief Executive Officer Gracie Geikie had also described the volunteers as the integral part of the festival.
"No volunteers, no RWMF," said Geikie. Some of them had been volunteering for more than eight years.
This year STB will engage 120 volunteers to help the festival which is entering into its 12th year and selection will be conducted in May.
The volunteers will be needed at the media centre, secretariat, at the gate and helping musicians to carry their instruments.
Each band will also have one volunteer assign to look after them. This year 17 volunteers will be needed to look after the 17 bands that are confirmed to perform at the festival.
Those who are selected as volunteers will be given t-shirts to wear while on duty and meal allowance of RM25 per day per person. They will also be provided with accommodation during the whole duration of the festival.

Economic Woes And Pandemic Fail To Dampen RWMF 2009
By Amrizan Madian
KUCHING, July 20 (Bernama) -- The 2009 Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) at the Sarawak Cultural Village that ended at midnight July 12 once again lived up to expectations and proved its exclusivity.
The 12th edition of the festival organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) with the cooperation of Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines at the foothills of the Santubong peak created an extraordinary aura that mesmerized visitors from all over the world.
The initial skepticism that the event this time may lose its allure due to the world economic downturn and the H1N1 pandemic was proven wrong when nearly 20,000 rainforest music lovers, local and foreign, camped at the Cultural Village from July 10-12.
Like in the previous years, it is obvious that the RWMF still has the magic to allure tourists, local and international, through the traditional music rendered by well known groups from Europe, Africa, United States, Asia and local traditional music groups.
This year 13 foreign groups - Zawose Family Africa (Tanzania), Noreummachi (South Korea), Moana & The Tribe (New Zealand), Red Chamber (Kanada/China), Jouhiorkesteri (Finland), Muzsikas (Hungary), Inti Illimani (Chile), Jeff & The Vida (United States), Dazkarieh (Portugal), Oudaden (Mesir), Poum Tchak (France), Sekaa Jaya Jenggala (Indonesia) and The Nicholas Orchestra 9 (Poland) - took part in RWMF.
A FORUM FOR ENTHUSIASTS
Four groups from Malaysia - Asika, La-E-Tuyang, Kinabalu Merdu Sound and Akasha - performed in the event.
Sarawak's Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong noted that while the world has been confronted with a global economic crisis and the H1N1 pandemic, t here is no stopping the music lovers from coming and enjoying the 2009 RWMF.
While the number of patrons this time may have declined slightly, but on the whole the conservative target of 20,000 patrons for the three nights has been achieved.
"RWMF still has the charm to attract visitors to Sarawak and this has been proven by the failure of the global economic downturn and the pandemic to deter visitors from arriving at Sarawak Cultural Village this year," he told reporters here.
Manyin added that the RWMF today serves as an important forum for all the rainforest music enthusiasts and the Sarawak Cultural Village is the place where the rainforest music is celebrated every July.
HAS LASTED 12 YEARS
It is obvious that STB with the cooperation of Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines and the sponsors are going all out to ensure that RWMF will continue in the future other than offering something new to the music lovers.
"We are still studying ways to introduce another new product in the tourism calendar, something similar to RWMF, known as the World Gong Festival here next year," he said.
According to Manyin, his side would work with the Museums Department to conduct a detailed study before the World Gong Festival can be implemented successfully like the RWMF that has lasted 12 years.
In the inaugural year, RWMF received not even 500 visitors with half of them under invitation.
Nonetheless, due to earnest efforts of all parties concerned, RWMF today has emerged as a highly recognised tourism event in the region.
HOW DO VISITORS FIND IT
A visitor from Singapore Nazmi Shamsudin noted that this is his third visit to the RWMF and obviously the event has its own appeal and uniqueness.
"Each time I come here I get the opportunity to meet music lovers from all over the world and this time it was even more enthralling despite the poor economic outlook," he said.
He also praised the steps taken by the organisers to ensure tight security and conduct health screening because this provided greater sense of security for the patrons in the Cultural Village.
John Branden from Australia noted that the RWMF is unique and has successfully attracted thousands of visitors from all over the world.
"I have been attending RWMF since 2005 and many of my new friends from Europe come to Sarawak to join this event every year just because of the music," he said.
AWARD WINNER
The RWMF event, has won the Aseanta Award of Excellence 2009 for the Asean marketing and promotion campaign other then the Heritage and Culture Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Award 2006.
Meanwhile, the Tourism Malaysia's Senior Deputy Director of Communication and Publicity Nor Aznan Sulaiman pointed out that the RWMF is one of the tourism products that managed to attract many tourists to Malaysia since the last 12 years.
He pointed that the widespread publicity by the local and foreign media managed to attract tourists and music lovers to the country especially to the Sarawak Cultural Village.
"We at Tourism Malaysia hope that the efforts to promote and introduce Malaysia through the uniqueness of its culture can be continued in the future.
As for the first five months of the year the number of visitors to Malaysia increased by 2.6 to 9.2 million compared with 9.0 million for the same period last year.
